Today saw the opening of the Roda and Sfakera recycling centre. There are now ten of these centres around the island, manned by volunteers in an attempt to help the present situation with domestic refuse. If, by recycling, we can reduce the amount going to landfill it can only help the situation. The centre is just outside Roda behind the Pegasus hotel on the main road to Corfu town half way between the Tropicana and the campsite.
Steve and I are among the volunteers who will man the centre for two hours a day. At the moment there are enough volunteers to man the centre 6 days a week for a couple of hours each day. If each centre does as much as the one at Liapades, we could be recycling over 2500 bins worth of refuse that would have gone to land fill and also provide many wheelchairs for the people of Corfu.

With the recycling centre now firmly established, and support increasing daily, it was good to see that the mountain of waste products on the Acharavi road had been all but cleared away yesterday. Obviously, there is some planning taking place, as the clearance coincided with the re-introduction of bins around the village.

It seems that the Recycling Centre was really busy today. Our centre at Roda is one of the few that is open every day.

Sadly all the bins out in Roda, along the Roda-Acharavi road and in Acharavi are either green or blue. So where can anybody put there general waste? My guess is most will end up in the bins provided meaning the recycling waste becomes contaminated. It looks like a promising start but without anywhere for general waste problems will sadly continue.

If you read the sign on the front of the green bins, Dave, they are the ones for general waste. The blue bins are for recyclable materials, as indicated on the outside. At the moment, it's probably still better to separate the recyclable materials at home and take them to the recycling centre.

Thanks for clarifying that one Steve; lets hope those who use bins do so correctly. I do separate and take to centre what they need, compost or burn and just get rid of remainder which is much less than it used to be. Its all new for the locals and lets hope they can embrace it. The Centre it seems is doing very well considering only open few weeks and as you say its only centre open every day.

We have managed to get our non- recyclable rubbish down to one carrier bag a week with the rest either going to the recycling center or our compost heap.
The village has now plenty of brand new rubbish bins, and the pile of rubbish at the quarry towards Acharavi is now almost gone, but there is still some work to do to tidy up the surrounding area, but council is working on it.
