I know that the ambitions of some of Roda’s young people go way beyond the village and that therefore the employment of outsiders will be essential.

BOTH YOU AND JAN SEEM TO BE LIVING IN A DREAM WORLD. I KNOW WHAT I SEE AND WHAT BAR AND RESTAURANT OWNERS TELL ME. I AM NOT CONFUSED RE BREXIT. IT WILL BE DISASTEROUS FOR NOT ONLY GREECE BUT THE WHOLE OF THE CURRENT EU INCLUDING THE UK. HEALTH COVER MAY NOT BE IMPORTANT TO YOU BUT TRY AND USE THE 6 MONTHS IN/OUT, AS YOU DO AT THE MOMENT, IN THE FUTURE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. NO HEALTH COVER - NO HOLIDAYS THEREFORE NO UK TOURISTS. INSURANCE WILL BE PROHIBITIVE FOR THE OLDER PERSON. IT'S STILL MY VIEW THAT IT'S MAINLY THE UK TOURIST THAT SPENDS ANY MONEY IN RODA. THIS IS GETTING BORING. I THINK I WILL LEAVE THIS WEBSITE AS MANY HAVE.

I THINK I WILL LEAVE THIS WEBSITE AS MANY HAVE. Of course we are very concerned about Brexit, maybe more than most visitors to the island. We travel extensively throughout Europe in our motorhome and will be in France on Brexit Day, when in theory our driving licences are no longer valid! As for all the insurances etc that all this travelling involves it leaves us very concerned, but we are getting no answers from either side. It now appears that even Bernier the chief EU negotiator may be replaced shortly! There appears to be an agreement for the EHIC scheme to be still available during the transition period, IF there is no hard Brexit. We will just have to wait and see what the politicians come up with and deal with it appropriately. I am sure that some EU countries, notably Spain would be very reluctant to lose the large expat communities, so am hoping for a modicum of common sense. Jan

I can say very little more until such time as you stop shouting & ranting, Laurence. I'll happily contribute more when you calm down, and perhaps split your thread into two separate issues.
I accept what smg says, which is why I said that businesses growing growing their own timber 'may obviate' the need for outside employment. I'm well aware that many of Roda's sons & daughters head off to university on the mainland, as can be witnessed in Roda Park, Niko's Family Taverna etc. Equally, there are those like Nemo, Skouna & Tropicana where the children are the business.
As I understand it, many local youngsters only want to work in bars & restaurants on their own terms - this has been repeated to us several times. Maybe watching tourists enjoying themselves has rubbed off on them. Businesses are increasingly having to find workers from the mainland or further afield, which practice brings with it the complication of accommodation. I once thought that fluency in English by Greek children would reduce the need for UK workers, but that clearly is no longer true. What we need now are multi-lingual workers to capitalise on the influx of other nationalities. Albanians seem to speak a multitude of languages ... maybe they will step in.

Laurence - Your message in the shoutbox seriously contravenes our terms & conditions and it's not enough to hide behind a third party. I'm leaving it there for other people to see what you are capable of and decide for themselves.

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" Steve comes to mind. I have been reminded of the Makis incident some time ago. Commission? Also "he who doth protest too much" also comes to mind don't you think?

I'm not protesting about anything, Laurence, merely resisting the urge to ban you for being rude & abusive. People will decide for themselves ...

Pot Kettle Black Steve. You mention the hammer and sickle and Muslim music. How racist can you get? I have many Muslim friends in Roda and other places and have listened to their enjoyable music also I have been in Moscow and Leningrad pubs displaying the symbols. Furthermore Steve I don't shout and rant merely state the facts.

Laurence criticised other foreign nationals for bringing food with them and my point was that Brits (not just the English) do exactly the same. We do pick up a selection of treats such as Stornaway black pudding, pale rose wine from the Luberon, confit of duck, cassoulet or boudin noir, none of which are available in Corfu and many of which we actually use en route. We cannot find ready-made polenta or 'Pocket Coffee' in Greece. Neither can we find Espelette pepper here, but we do now grow our own morron, padron, piquillo & guindilla peppers which we discovered in Spain. Just how many of these things do you think we can actually fit into our camper on a single journey and how long do you think they last?
Incidentally Laurence, Muslim Magometovich Magomayev, dubbed the "King of Songs" and the "Soviet Sinatra" was a Soviet Azerbajiani baritone operatic pop singer. As far as I know, his name has nothing at all to do with his faith.
You are not stating the facts, Laurence - A fact is a statement that can be proven true or false. If you had raised these issues while you were in Roda, I could have proved you to be mistaken. An opinion is an expression of a person's feelings that cannot be proven. Opinions can be based on facts or emotions and sometimes they are meant to deliberately mislead others. Facts or emotions, Laurence? - you choose, but I rather think it is the latter.

Nobody mentioned faith Steve except you. I stand by everything FACT that I have posted. My eyes do not deceive me as I walked the beach and village every day and night for 6 weeks. I remember only seeing you in or outside Pirates apart from walking past to get there.

I'll think you'll find that Islam is the Muslim faith, Laurence, but you've aroused my curiosity. I've never considered people's religions in Roda, other than the Orthodoxy of our hosts. I've never knowingly met anyone here of the Muslim faith - how come you know so many, or is this just another red herring?
As for seeing us in the village, you need to get out more! You seem to have one route only, from Pipitsas to the Harbour Bar and that does not take you past Tropicana, Pixida, Dimitri's, Yummies, Nemo, Il Gelato, Skouna, The Boathouse, Ammos Grill room or many of the other places we regularly go. Neither do we see you at any of the supermarkets - do you bring food out with you too?
Yesterday, we were chatting with a friend whose family, between them, own six accommodations that I know of along St George's Bay, together with several other bars & accommodations in Corfu Town & Othoni. As a result of booking.com & airbnb.com, everything is full. In fact, he was saying that Corfu is full! It's time to stop harking on about the Brits and accept that the mix of visitors you prefer could be gone forever, in addition to anything that Mrs May might yet do.

I am aware that Islam is the Muslim faith. I don't need you to tell me that Steve. So you are not friendly with any Albanians. I wonder why? You obviously don't know where I walk, what bars I visit or what restaurants I eat in. Maybe you should follow me or is your arse stuck to one seat. One day the brits will not come to Roda and this will be aided and abetted by the likes of you. The Forum is for guests opinions not just yours. I would be obliged if you would remove my name from your list. It's obvious the Forum is for you and you alone.
