And according to the news website the locals are doing their bit to remove the stockpiled rubbish on the outskirts of Roda. They set fire too it. Happened two nights in a row. The toxic cloud must have been great. It is no use glossing over the rubbish problem to keep the tourists coming. They just have to arrive and drive past the piles and if first timers it will be their last. I love Corfu and especially Roda but I don't wear blinkers.

No one is trying to 'gloss over' the problem, johnboy, nor make it sound unimportant. It's simply being reported as we see it unfold.

Must admit, on our travels we saw lots of large piles of rubbish which do look unsightly, however, these were mostly away from the main tourist roads. On our way to the airport on Sunday, just outside Roda we saw two men with a large digger type machine loading all of the rubbish into skips, presumably for taking to landfill/disposing of. It’s not as if no effort is being made, and personally I don’t think it’s as bad as it was a couple of years ago.

Totally agree, Wendy - and did it spoil your holiday? I doubt that you would let it. Unfortunately, there are some who have made a mission out of this issue and they are probably the ones who would let it ruin their holidays. It is a problem and it does need sorting, but maybe many of us love Corfu because of its imperfections ...

Latest news...for now. No missions involved here simply providing news in one place, that others could but don't. I have no intentions to let piles of rubbish ruin my or other people's holidays. www.enimerosi.com/details_en.php?id=23259

I agree with you, kaz - there are many who say they love Corfu but will not come back because of the rubbish. That sounds a bit like conditional love to me, whereas you reflect the feelings of the majority who do love the island - warts and all.

If you are staying centrally in Roda, having a resort holiday only, using the beach, local tavernas then you wouldn't know there was a problem on the Island, apart from what you see on your transfer from airport. Roda has done a very good job keeping the resort clean.
