Hi
We aren’t coming to Roda until July but have just read on another site that refuse is currently not being collected on Corfu - is that correct or yet more scaremongering?
Regards
Brian

It's not scaremongering, Brian - there is still a problem that needs addressing.

Thanks Pete
Since I wrote the post I’ve seen a lot more on the subject so can see it’s an issue - hopefully it will get resolved sooner rather than later. Won’t stop us coming but better to know what to expect if it continues.
Regards
Brian

We all hope it's sorted soon, Brian, but it's been going on for a while now. The huge influx of tourists in the summer is typical of many places in the world now, and the problems are not confined to Corfu. We can all play a small part by acting responsibly ....

There was a major problem with rubbish when we last came a couple of years ago; that was to do with local residents blockading the landfill site I believe. Is the rubbish problem now as bad as it was then?

That was when all the bins were still around the village, Wendy. They were moved out last year, which is not ideal, but your accommodation owner now has a responsibility to take your waste to the appropriate bins. Make sure that he or she does ....

I’m sure they will. Never stayed there before but reports are good. Rubbish was all over the island last time, everywhere we went. Hasn’t stopped us coming back though- Where are the bins these days then?

There are a lot more towards Acharavi on the opposite side near to the BP garage, where there is good off road parking. Jan

There is to be a demonstration today by the people of Corfu protesting about the rubbish, saying that the problem is killing the island and pleading with the authorities to get their collective finger out and sort it. This is the seond one this week. The locals do care, and we can help them as much as possible by carefully disposing of our waste and litter.

A big effort was made on Saturday to clear the accumulations of rubbish from both Acharavi & Roda, with diggers & trucks working throughout the day. There is possibly less litter in the village of Roda than there ever was as locals are expected to bag it up and take it to central points. They do become an eyesore, but only when you're driving past them. I don't think this is a permanent fix, and we still need intervention from the highest levels to get things sorted. It's an increasingly common problem wherever there are large numbers of tourists - maybe the EU can finally realise how important it is to local economies.
