I should have explained with my photos of the cows, that here in Corfu, especially down here at the coast it is very unusual to see a cow, let alone a whole herd of them. It was such a surprise, and lovely to see their calves with them. I think that in all the years I have been coming to Corfu and Roda I haven't seen another cow except for a distant view of one in a farm yard. It is very common to see the goats and the sheep roaming around, usually with a dog or two to look after them , but cows never. On our journeys down to Almyros to gather sea grass for the garden we pass a field where the sheep are so much bigger than the goats! There are also many types of poultry running around in the olive groves. The hay and the alfalfa have been gathered in and the grass is lovely and green now for the animals to graze on. Goats and sheep seem to eat most of what is in the field but hens and poultry don't seem to like the wild mint. There is a farm yard near Acharavi main street where everything has been eaten except the mint!. Those orange and lemon trees that escaped the frost last winter are now covered in fruit. In fact some of the trees are shedding fruit like mad. I will be looking for a few bitter oranges towards Christmas for my roast gammon.

Jan, you are so right. Cows are nearly always grazed high up in the hills, the plateau on Pantokrator at about 800metres is popular especially in summer. In summer they graze at night and are in brick barns during the heat of the day, in winter they graze during the day as it is cooler. When walking in the hills off track but on footpaths i have seen cows both in barns and grazing but never have i seen them in fields like in most of Europe. There are good fields to be grazed around Acharavi and Almiros yet even when the cows arrive they are on the headland where the quality of grazing is more suited to sheep and goats. Once grazed they usually are driven in trucks to their barns for milking rather than milked out in the fields.
What happens with pigs i do not know. I have seen the odd one in a garden, but they need serious shade and maybe sun protection during the summer. The most recent pigs i saw were 2 medium sized ones on the back of a 4x4. I thought they were on the way to butchers to be slaughtered but they passed bye on 3 consecutive days!

Our landlord told us that there are wild cows on Pantokrator, but I'm not sure how long ago that was. A friend's brother from Nymfes used to keep 30 pigs nearby, but I've never seen them.
