The north of Corfu was plunged into darkness at 6pm last night, just as the last light had faded in the western sky. Not the 20 minute quick-fix type of power cut, but something a bit more serious. We hadn't realised that even the grill room was out of action as the spits are electrically operated. There was more light from the boat sheltering in the bay than there was in the whole of Roda, as bars scrambled to find candles and other forms of lighting. Strangers loomed out of the darkness in the unlit streets - thank goodness they all talk a lot! Some time after 8pm, a loud cheer went up just in time to see Albania score a goal against Turkey.
It's thought that there was some sort of explosion at an electrical installation near to Seki Bay.

It's lashing down with rain again tonight in Roda - there won't be many of us out & about. Extra personnel have been sent from DEDIE in Ioannina, Igoumenitsa and Patra. According to Nikos Savvanis, secretary of the Corfu workers’ union, there are still several isolated areas throughout the island that remain without electricity. The damage in the south of Corfu has been severe with one Greek man, who had been working in the UK, tragically losing his life in a flash flood.
There's nothing on our local forecasts, but the Severe Weather site is forecasting the possibility of a 'Tornado Like Cyclone' (TLC) passing between Africa & Sicily, and into the Ionian Sea later on this week. We're hoping it will be to the south of Corfu, but the mainland could suffer.
