As 1st March to many Greeks signals the start of Spring so this thread becomes the follow up to Winter in Roda.
The only change in the village was the Rialto, the small pizza restaurant/take away opened last night, from 6pm til midnight. Sign still up for today but i am not sure if they'll be open everyday or just weekends.

The 1st March also is the first day following the end of the shooting season so is pleasantly quiet, just the sound of birdsong and the early morning rain.
Rialto is open every evening.

Today a walk around reveals more activity to prepare for the new season.
At Theodoras work is moving on at greater intensity to modernise apartments and the garden area.
On the beach front some work to the grill room is underway and there are signs of life at Coral. Just around the corner outside work is underway at Valentinos. Alex is working hard at the new Crusoes, the stage area is being extended and more support poles were being delivered today. There were signs of life at New Port yesterday and also at several of the beach front tourist shops. Opposite the Dolphin Floyd is still busy with updating the outside area that was once part of Crusoes.
The new flooring at the Mexican is now finished. Work is still underway at Roundabout Bar, the doors removed, cleaned and rehung and signs of work inside today ---- still not know if it is opening this year or just being made ready to rent. Two doors away some works inside the small shop which has a for sale sign in the window.
The street lights now all finished at the crossroads. Again signs of life at both Pegasus and Oasis. The garden plants at the corner have all been removed and the ground being prepared ready for new stock to arrive. Around the back the wall is being whitewashed.
All the grass verges, fields and grounds of empty or part built apartments are now full in flower adding colour as you walk or drive around.
Further afield Roda Beach is open as the gardens are being tidied after the winter and signs of other general maintenance taking place.
All indications are that this month will be busy and several places will be opening before Easter this year.

A great roundup of events, Dave - good to see so many people at it so early. As with many of us, Giorgos’s plants were hit badly in the frosts after all the hard work he puts in. It will be interesting to see what is happening at New Port as the family rarely put in an appearance before Easter. Looking forward to our first tour of the village ...

I did wonder if Alex at Crusoe’s was going to break into the ‘tribute band’ market, with his new staging - now that would cause an upset! Having seen Sara’s latest photos of the work, it looks more like a dining area and it could be that the license for the premises is for a restaurant. It will be interesting to see the outcome ...

Yes Steve, they were bolting smallish tables to the floor of the raised area yesterday at Crusoes.
Round the corner work is underway to the outside area at Nikos Taverna, lots brickwork removed and dumped along the road in grass area, not clear what type refurbishment is going to take place. Meanwhile the small front roofing has been removed, looking like a replacement due too rotten wood.
No other action this afternoon after this mornings rains.

Work continues at Crusoes and Theodoras on a daily basis while at Petrinos most of the roofing has now been removed. At the Roundabout work has moved inside.
At Nikos the rubble has been removed and works to the drainage are taking place, just down the road the roadside paving outside the closed bakery has been repaired and it looks like some work is taking place inside - no indication as to whether it is to tidy to advertise for rent or if it is to open this year.
Despite the few thunderstorms this week the flowers around continue to multiply. The winds have brought the sea higher and larger waves but nothing crashing onto the beach road like the end of last year.
The road from the traffic lights to the beach gets worse by the day, the many dips and sunken draincovers now accompanied by several new potholes, incresing in size after each storm. Workmen appeared and put 2 cones either side of a raised manhole, they were then moved to the roadside and have no vanished but no repairs have been done. The road really needs to be completely relaid and evened which would be a substantial job but one becoming more necessary each passing month.
Opposite the manhole at the Mexican the tables are being refitted and some painting is going on.

Thanks for the news, Dave - are you saying that work is suddenly continuing on the main drainage system?

No unfortunately it looks more likely on one manhole but we can keep our fingers crossed it is more extensive.
Meanwhile at Yummies the inside is being altered to increase the available seating area.
At Pirates the palm on the beach was severly pruned and the trunk thinned yesterday, the power sawing making conversation outside Alexandros difficult. They were also sanding the decking and repolishing the outside beach chairs.
Signs of life inside Harbour Bar yesterday. Maybe just checking all ok and listing the jobs needed to be done before opening.
At Nemos the outside roofing was repainted.
IT IS JUST 14 DAYS UNTIL FIRST DIRECT FLIGHT FROM UK DUE TO ARRIVE!!

A stroll around Roda this morning reveals works to the outside space by stairs outside the Natural Products shop by ACS, a new perimeter wall.
At Roundabout 2 ladies still busy working on the inside, opposite at the shops whitewash on ground indicate with arrows in and out and parking spaces. An in arrow where there is a 1 foot kerb suggests more work to be done.
Theodoras palms severely pruned, workmen there today continue on new roofing to refurbished apartments, also loads new windows awaiting fitting. Very busy now but all works are poolside of road. At Angelinas new wall units being delivered for the changed entrance area.
Wallking round the apartments next to Valentinos had all shutters and doors open to ventilate and clean.
Outside Boathouse the tables and chairs have been painted and are outside drying, there are also works and new walls in their family garden. The super market opposite had men working on yhe garden area behind the shop. Coral, working on decorating inside some rooms, the house next door is being painted.
On beach seaweed has cleared itself leaving just a lot between Boathouse and Sams Boats, between river and harbour. The main beach has very little to clear, however there are patches just in the sea to remove.
At Crusoes new home the bar that was has been removed and that third of the inside being decorated and floor concreted. Looks like it will be opened up to link with outside a d bar placed elsewhere. The steep steps that were at front have been cemented to form a ramp parallel to road down to outside area making access easier.
Still work at the Dolphin and outshide it. No other signs of life along seafront. Villa Elaini and Christos opposite have tidied up outside, potted plants and tubs returned.
Petrinos still working on the roofing, shops next to Oscars being cleaned ready for opening. The works continue at the Mexican with painting, mini market next door was working on the canopy over outside front.
Round corner Nikos Taverna refurb to front taking shape, even partly done it makes Roda Park look a little aged. Decorating continues at the village bakery nearby.
Meanwhile in Sfakera i have finished whitewashing to my internal walls, just outside front to be done.

At Alexandros yesterday Andois, Christina,Natalie and friends were all busy doing some decorating, painting the ceiling fans, the outside ceiling, the lower walls being covered in a fake brickwork, the cedar supports being painted, the light fittings painted. Should look bright and inviting when finished. They also have some outside decking to replace as presently seating is restricted to about 16, sufficient for now but they'll need more for the season as it is such a sun trap.
Next door in Pirates beach area the decorating, repairs to decking, have all been completed. Again they have just half of their seats out at present.
No sign of life at El Mar as yet, their outside decking has damage necessitating repair. The beach area will again look the better once they put out their furniture all handmade from wood.

Alexandros have completed there decorating, also having the brick effect inside. They have done a nice job.
Petrinos are in the process of fitting their new roofing.
Crusoes have fitted new wooden and glass doorsto the front and half the side facing the outside area. These doors can be folded back completely.
Nemos are doing some work to their roadside wall and small garden feature.
Still very busy at Theodoras but it seems they are now mainly decorating the insides of the refurbed apartments.
Still work ongoing at Dolphin, but quiet at the new 12 Gods (was Roundabout bar) at present. It is also quiet at Nikos Taverna and the village bakery opposite this week, with a lull in the works but plenty tools, materials etc lying about.
In Sfakera i have completed all my whitewashing.
Today the first direct flights arrive from Europe, just 6 in total with 2 from the UK. A few are taking advantage of the low prices to make a visit to the UK before Easter.

The last 2 days have seen the first swallows start to arrive and chase the insects on the wing. I await the return of the house martins to my balcony.
