Last night after the service they paraded the cross with followers holding candles around the village. At midnight the bells toll, locals fire their guns, fireworks are set off, Lent is over. Very noisy before they rush indoors for their lamb soup.

Kala Pascha, today is Easter Sunday. Morning services with music in the alleyways of Town as every Church parade icon of Resurrection, the last parade at 10am from St Spiriodon Church. Town empties, everyone goes to their village or the countryside. Lamb is traditionally cooked on the spit, not easy in towns kandounia, hence countryside comes into its own. Often villagers will folow the Priest, children bearing the hexapteryga, standards with seraphs to a small chapel for mass. Villages cook spit roasted lamb or kokoretsi (the innards and offal tied by the intestine to to spit roasted), i will joining in at Sfakera taverna. Today the news has advised cook early as rains due mid afternoon.

Καλό Πάσχα, everyone - hope the rain held off Dave. We spent an hour in Pompei this afternoon watching lightening strike Mt Vesuvius! Thankfully it passed over and we were sure again that all the noise was down to thunder! Tomorrow, it’s off to Paestum to see the Greek temples ....

The rain did indeed keep away, a cloudy humid day. A morning walk on the beach yesterday saw lambs roasting on the spit outside Pirates and Harbour Bar, music over speakers in street at Dolphin. In Sfakera the meal was delicious and plentiful, with red eggs sat on a koulari for all. Spiros clearly had a dodgy egg as he beat everyone using just the one egg! After al had eaten including Spiros and family there was greek dancing. A really nice late afternoon and evening.

Easter Monday and there are services everywhere especially in the villages. Many including Nymphes and Karousades having processions today from their churches some with philharmonics others with choirs and dancers. In larger villages or where 2 are close there is a split with a second procession on Tuesday. In Sidari and a few other places the event is on Friday or even Low Sunday. From Viros they march, then take boats to Mouse Island. Many of these events are followed by either a feast or a festival. A list of the places and days can be found on Corfupress.com but not times.

If anyone reading this thread wishes to visit for the 2018 Easter celebrations then it is early with Easter Sunday being 8th April.
If staying in Town it is advisable to book early for central or cheaper hotels. Some are already taking bookings. Flights start near end of March, Ryanair a few days before Easyjet. Again to get cheaper prices it is advisable to book immediately the flights are issued, usually in August, just log onto the website and they will email you when they are published.

Today is Burnt Thursday, Tsiknopempti. Many Greeks have grilled charred meats today. I and others will celebrate at To Neon in Sfakera but all grill rooms will do similar.
If you want to see what else is on in the lead up to Easter please read through this thread from last year, remembering Easter Sunday is on 8th April this year.
I will post local carnival dates when known. For Carnival events in Corfu Town over next 2 weeks see Corfupress.com for details.

Carnival reaches its climax today, a joint one with Peroulades and Velonades taking place in Velonades from 3pm. There is one in Nymphes from 3.30pm and also one in Karousades. The final bug parade in Corfu Town is also this afternoon.
Tomorrow Lent begins with Clean Monday, kite flying and picnics if the weather allows. Roda beach has had the seaweed pushed to the shore to make the beach ckean for the kite flyers. The food this day is Lenten bread, taramasalata, shellfish, squid, octopus, vegetables.

Hi Kaz, it was a day of drizzle so kite flying here was limited and picnics indoors.
Carnival was great, if you google Corfupress.com you will find a video of the Nymphes floats that came through Sfakera, Roda and Acharavi before returning tp party in Nymphes.

This Sunday 1st April is Palm Sunday here. There will be the usual Parade in Corfu Town. The 3 Philharmonic Bands will all be marching but this year, for the first time in about 20 years, they are to form a massed band for the final march along the Liston. This will he some 500 players and will be a great sight, and sound making a visit doubly worthwhile.
