Good morning from Roda. The first day of 2017 has dawned bright and clear. We have blue skies, some white harmless looking clouds, the barest of breezes and it is cold. Well, in the shade it is cold, in the sun it is lovely and warm and we had breakfast on the balcony. The sea is blue and calm and Albania is so clear across the channel. We are in our habitual hazy state.
Yesterday felt cold all day despite there being a lot of sunshine. We did have some cloud building up, but only enough to give us a pretty sunset. The sea remained calm all day with just gentle long waves coming ashore. We had a lovely starlit night for our walk to the village to see in the New Year, and back again. It was quite quiet, not much gunfire or fireworks, though I did hear some going off around 2am.

At the moment where the air is much colder than the sea the moisture leaves the sea and immediately forms clouds hovering the shoreline. I can see them from the balcony at dawn and this morning popped down to have a look, sea is flat. All was peaceful in the low cloud, frost on the seaweed.

Good morning from Roda. It continues to be lovely, we have blue skies, only a little in the way of a breeze, and quite a few clouds around. The peaks of Albania are shrouded with the. The visibility is good towards Albania though we are still very hazy. The sea is flat calm and a lovely shade of sky blue. It is very cold in the shadows and early on as Dave has reported. I am never up and about early enough to see frost on the seaweed but Steve says he has. People who have been here for some time are reporting it as the coldest spell in wintertime for many a year. So very cold at night, but boy, the daytime sunshine sure makes up for it, most of the time. We enjoyed breakfast on a very warm balcony this morning.
Yesterday was another lovely day with blue skies, a few clouds and barely a whisper of a breeze. We had a lovely walk around the village (I will report on that later), and ended up at Pirates for a coffee. The clouds did increase a bit during the afternoon, but by sunset they had all but disappeared and we had another lovely sunset. The evening was cold and dark with a brilliant starlit sky, so we stayed in and had our steak pie to see in the New Year as befits my adopted Scottish custom.

Good morning from Roda. It is all change this morning, We have a cloudy grey sky, but almost no wind so it's not as bad as it could be, still very chilly though. So no breakfast on the balcony. We are due some very cold nights later on this week with the day time temperature only getting to 5°C, and night time temperatures dropping to as low as -6°C. I am bringing the winter quilt out, I think, today. There was a probability of snow towards the weekend but that has faded away, thankfully. The sea is calm and we can't hear any waves. The visibility is not so great with both Albania and us decidedly hazy.
Yesterday was lovely all day. Cold in the shade yes, but in the sun it was glorious. We stood basking in it at Almyros chatting with our neighbours as their new puppy explored. There were many groups of people out for a nice walk, with and without dogs, or a cycle ride. Clouds started building up a bit as the day went on to give us a nice sunset. The evening was starlit and for the first time in ages we had a crescent moon. Already the haziness was gathering as the lights of Albania were not as clear, across the sea that had barely a ripple. .
The temperature at 10am on Tuesday 3rd January 2017 was 7.3°C, real feel 7.0°C, and the humidity 70% giving a dew point of 2°C.

Snow! In Corfu! ... well it has been known. Many are saying this is the longest spell of cold weather they have experienced in Corfu, and I can only agree. I have known it colder, but not for so long. The snow that Jan refers to is a system coming down through the Balkans and providing a good covering to parts of Albania and across northern Greece. In the great scheme of things, we are not too far from the edge of that system and I guess it will depend on whether the winds remain northerly, or veer slightly towards north-east. If they do that, we could well see a bit of the white stuff by the weekend. There are mixed feelings about it, as it could provide a rare treat for the local kids - whatever their age!

Good morning from Roda. We awoke to heavy rain this morning, which almost looked a bit thick. The mist and murk was heavy down in the valleys behind us. Albania though was fairly clear across the channel with a topping of heavy clouds. Though to be honest the sky to the north was showing patches of blue missing from the southern sky. The rain did stop and the sun is trying to break though and succeeding at times. We had a thunderstorm with accompanying lightning during the night, and Steve reported a short lived gale in the small hours. There was certainly a lot of rain during the night judging by the puddles and sodden lawns this morning. It is fairly mild though and there is just about a discernable wind.
Yesterday, after the very cloudy start degenerated to give us a rain shower around 11am. The afternoon became very mizzly (fine rain), with on and off showers. It stayed very mild though and ended up a fraction warmer than the previous sunny day. The rain was just about holding off as we set off back home from a drink a Pirates, but the thunder storm with a few rumbles of thunder was starting.

Good morning from Roda. It was still a very wet and rainy scene when we woke this morning, though there were a few blue patches towards Albania. However the rain really set in and the clouds and mist descended. Albania disappeared from view , as did many of our valleys. The rain did stop and the sun came out to give us a partial rainbow. Again there is almost no wind and the sea is calm. The wet makes it feel much colder than it is. We are due for some very cold but dry days with negative figures during the night for 4 days and the day time temperatures barely making it into double figures! The photo was taken yesterday, but it looked the same this morning.
Yesterday was wet for the most part. With the rain coming down heavily at times. The garden is water logged with standing puddles and Steve's leeks and sprouting broad beans are doing the doggy paddle just to keep their heads above water. There were drier moments and the sun did try, but failed to make an appearance. The sea and the wind both remained calm. The temperature at 10am on Thursday 5th January 2017 was 10.4°C, real feel 10.0°C, and the humidity 79% giving a dew point of 6°C.

Good morning from Roda. The sun is back! OK it is not all good news, we have some clouds and a very strong wind. It is freezing on our north facing balcony. Albania is amazingly clear across a very stormy sea. There is a fresh dusting of snow over many of the peaks, so it all looks very pretty, if chilly. Our backdrop is its usual hazy self. The storm raged through the night with high winds, sufficient to push our balcony furniture around! We could hear the sea roaring as it raced towards the shore pushed by that strong northerly wind. We feel sorry for the poor young men standing on the harbour wall at Kassiopi waiting for the cross to be thrown into the sea for Epiphany. It will be a brave soul who retrieves it. What a difference in temperature from this day 2016, 12°C!
Yesterday was decidedly wet for most of the day. We did get a rare break in the rain, but for the most part it just poured down. By evening though the rain started to ease and then stop altogether, except for a bit of drizzle. Almost as an afterthought we could hear a few rolls of thunder as the rain drifted away, pushed by the strengthening winds.
The temperature at 10am on Friday 6th January 2017 was 6.6°C, real feel 4.0°C, and the humidity 60% giving a dew point of 1°C.

Good morning from Roda. The word for today is SNOW. We have a lovely sunny morning, blue skies with only a few clouds and across the channel Albania has lots of fresh snow on its peaks. BUT we had snow yesterday seemingly across the whole island judging by the local reports. It snowed enough to coat the sunbeds on our back lawn and the roads from Lafki upwards were covered. There would be kids both big and little enjoying themselves in it. The Greek news showed that we got off lightly compared to many places on the mainland. It may look pretty but it is bitterly cold, though we didn't get a frost because of the high winds we had during the night.
Yesterday was bright and sunny for the morning, but very windy. The clouds started being ominous around mid- afternoon when the snow came. It was such a surprise though cold enough for it. However the shower was quite short lived and we had the surprise of an amazing sunset. The dying day coated the whole area in golden shades. The evening was bitter with strong winds coming off the sea, but they had eased a bit by the end. The temperature was dropping steadily throughout the night.
The temperature at 10am on Saturday 7th January 2017 was 2.9°C, real feel 1.0°C, and the humidity 49% giving a dew point of -7°C.
Yesterday's maximum temperature was 8.2°C (real feel 4.0°C) and the minimum was 3.0°C , the dew point -5°C. The maximum humidity was 75% and the minimum 56%. 7th. January 2016 the maximum temperature was 14.5°C and the minimum 11.5°C.

Good morning from Roda. The word for today is COLD. We have a lovely sunny morning, blue skies with a bank of clouds on the western horizon. There is a very cold breeze, and the sea is beautiful and blue but quite rough. We awoke to the constant sound of the waves crashing ashore. The snow tipped mountains of Albania look close enough to touch, it is so clear. We are still a bit hazy, not sure if it is because the sun is behind those hills. It was only 2°C, but still, in the sun it was warm enough to have our breakfast on the balcony without our coats on! Sitting here in the kitchen with my back to a sunny window it is baking, but my feet are freezing. The lowest ever recorded temperature in Corfu was -8.8°C.
Yesterday stayed lovely all day, but still very cold. We had ice puddles in the lawn. They did thaw out for a while, but gardeners up in the hills are reporting quite a lot of damage to their more tender plants. We are fearful for the blossom on the lemon and orange trees. No blossom no fruit later on in the year. We had a slight water leak near us that was ignored over the year, now it had burst dramatically. The water board men were here yesterday but came too late in the afternoon to fix it. Now they have a real job on their hands! Look at the photo below! The day drifted past a so-so sunset into a cold night. Though we did see the reappearance of the stars and the moon. It felt a bit warm because the wind was less, but it was an illusion.
The temperature at 10am on Sunday 8th January 2017 was 0.8°C, real feel 0.0°C, and the humidity 46% giving a dew point of -10°C.
Yesterday's maximum temperature was 4.6°C (real feel 5.0°C) and the minimum was 1.7°C , the dew point -6°C. The maximum humidity was 59% and the minimum 45%.

Good morning from Roda. The word for today is ICE. Ice as in frozen pipes. Talk about frozen assets! It is a good job we always keep a crate of filled 1.5L water bottles in case of emergencies. Usually for lack of water in the summer months. The owner of the Semeli hotel behind us has just photographed a chair standing on ice in his pool! Apart from that, there are clear blue skies, a few clouds, not much of a breeze and great visibility. The overnight frost is clearing, but our icy fairy grotto is back. The snowy peaks of Albania are a picture across the calm sea. The waves have died down considerably overnight. Breakfast was on the balcony in the sun with the shade temperature hitting 2°C. OK we both have about four layers of clothes but didn't need jackets. As I write this our water has returned, yippee!
Yesterday was cold and sunny all day. The clouds did build up a bit, but not enough to give much of a sunset. The day generally was cold, calm and clear. It didn't feel quite as cold because the breeze had mostly dropped, but there were still some quite strong gusts. The night saw some clouds but the stars were out as the temperature started falling. We are getting reports of many people with frozen pipes, swimming pools with a layer of ice, and much concern about all the tender plants in our gardens.
The temperature at 10am on Monday 9th January 2017 was 0.0°C, real feel 0.0°C, and the humidity 52% giving a dew point of -9°C.

I am now 36 hours with nothing more than a few drips of water. I am not alone, everyone is reporting similar problems. Lagging is thin as these minus temperatures are rare and worsened by air being cold and dry rather than wet. Looks like more minus nights until Thursday. The spring keeps flowing and water same as in summer.

Good morning from Roda. The word for today is SNOW! It has been snowing here since at least 8ish with local reports from Sidari, Sfakera and Acharavi where it started earlier. Up in the hills it must be so much worse. Our drive and the dirt track to our house are white with just a covering, but as it is still snowing that may get deeper. The ice fountain is still there. The snow is getting heavier and it is swirling around in the wind. The temperature is falling as I write. The heavy clouds are so low down that the hills have just about disappeared and looking the other way, we can barely see the sea let alone Albania. What I can see of the sea is pale grey and icy looking. It is bitter out when I tried to take a photograph to capture it. The local school has shut, probably so the kids can enjoy the chance of playing in the snow. It is supposed to snow only one day in four years in Corfu (except maybe on top of Pantokrator), I think we have had a millennia's worth. This day last year it was 17.1°C!!!!! The first photo is of the ice on the pool of the Semeli hotel behind us, the other one is taken from the side balcony this morning.
Yesterday stayed bright and sunny all day, though the clouds did build up a bit by late afternoon and we had quite a nice sunset. It was quite breezy at times during the evening making our walk to and from the village bracing to say the least. There was a cloudy sky but with big enough breaks to sea the moon and stars.
The temperature at 10am on Tuesday 10th January 2017 was 2.5°C, real feel -2.0°C, and the humidity 51% giving a dew point of -6°C.
Yesterday's maximum temperature was 5.2°C (real feel 2.0°C) and the minimum was -3.0°C , the dew point -7°C. The maximum humidity was 52% and the minimum 43%.

Very snowy here in Sfakera this morning, a good dusting covering grass areas, my patio and driveway. Swirling wind as well, drove to Acharavi and same there. Roads just wet and not too bad. Friends in Episkepsi saying it bit more snow up there. My water was coming back after 52 hours but a pipe burst so now i await the plumber!

At least you’re out & about, Dave - I get the feeling that most of the people who now live here are staying indoors hiding from the weather. Personally, we like the distinct seasons as they provide variety. Living in Corfu can still do that, but the balance is much better between hot & cold.
