Walking around the village to check on what bars and restaurants are open, we found the following places doing business. Pirates is open after its enforced shutdown by the noise police. It was a choice between paying a fine or closing for 10 days. There is an additional pool table in the annex that used to be a shop, where the date boards are. The place has been redecorated with new varnish on the bars and some new seating. It is all looking very smart. Smileys next door seems to be attracting quite a few customers, especially as they have two nice log burners going. They have added retractable windows to the upstairs balcony. Smiley's is also doing take away food and a curry night on Mondays. Oscars, we heard, also had an enforced shut down from the noise police whilst we were away, is also quite busy especially on their Friday 'Fish and Chip' nights and they are hosting a quiz night soon. The Drunken Sailor is open every night , and is hosting a table top sale in early December. Nemos is open as usual and is doing a good amount of business with children's parties, but the bar is also busy. Sandy's is open at the weekend and on darts and pool nights. The cafe/ bar opposite the pharmacy, formerly known as The Olive is also doing good business every time we have passed. Pixida is open every weekend, with Drossia and the two grill rooms open every night. Tropicana, with Tao and O Arabas are also open. So even in deepest winter it is still possible to do a pub crawl and get a nice meal. We like these quieter times but still can enjoy a drink and a nice meal if we want. I will report about other businesses open in and around the village later. Also there are developments in the former opticians shop, so, as soon as we know anything we will let you know, together with any other changes we notice.
I have to straighten a couple of details from this report. The Curry Night at Smileys is on Friday night NOT Mondays, and there was a reasonable crowd there last night. The cafe/ bar opposite the pharmacy is called Piedra. I apologise for my errors.

Up here in Sfakera the taverna is open all day everyday and food is available every evening. Getting a good few in and very busy when Olympiakos are on tv, like tonight in Europa league and Saturday when they play Corfu. Lot of work harvesting olives then pruning and burning so we have lot of wood burn in air by day and then from the houses burners by night. With school and early dark nights it seems the children have vanished during the week.

This air quality issue seems to be more pronounced this year, Dave - with thunderstorm asthma in Melbourne, a report today about particulate matter in the UK on today’s BBC news, and our own conditions here in Corfu. Fires are not permitted until November, but then there is the race to get all the prunings burned and get the olive nets down. With all those fires, and the lighting of fires & stoves, the complete absence of wind has made things very smokey over here. Bring back the rain & wind, I say!

This morning they were fitting awnings to the former opticians. The name of the business is Coffee Corner.

I bet The Tropicana and Oscar's are made up with that.

I’ve never subscribed to the view that you have to be sole business of your type in order to succeed ... it often helps to be amongst other similar outlets. Maybe Tropicana and Piedra will be affected in some way, but I can’t see it making any difference to Oscars. Whoever is behind the new venture is certainly going to town with the work - it can only be good for Roda. The other half of the previous optician’s has a sign on the wall announcing that we will also have an Orthopaedic Doctor next door.

I hear sundays xxmas craft sale at Oscars was a success, showing the many skills some have at baking, making cards, knitwear etc.

It is always an opportunity for winter socialising and to pick up a Christmas present or two and some Christmas food goodies. These craft fairs and table top sales are held through out the winter season and are always popular. We probably see more people in the winter than in the summer! Jan

Yesterday saw a jewellery sale in Sandy's Bar which seemed to be well attended.
A stroll in Acharavi this morning, lovely sunny day, to shop. Most are now decorated for xmas and look good. There are lights across road and LED tree on roundabout. An evening trip will will be needed to see the lights, but there are several music nights coming up either at Vengolos (sp) on beach or at Freddos.
Roda sees lights starting to appear, some outside Oscars and some on balconies. no doubt more will appear in next few days.
I have put my lights up on balcony, just white LED but different flashing sequence each day, plus a red star and a wreath with santa and ' hronia polla' in Greek on it. The low key turn on will be tonight before i go to the bouzouki night.

We had a Sunday walk around the village as it was a mild dry day. We went past the olive grove next to Theodoros ( I know we drive past it all the time, but it is only when you walk you notice the details) and admired how the olive trees in the grove had recovered from their almost savage pruning last winter. It looked beautiful again. Theo's is busy pruning many of his trees and he has lost at least one of his palms. Just along from Theo's the bank of the stream had several clumps of snowdrops still in flower. They were flowering before we left for the UK in October! We enjoyed a coffee at the Tropicana, which was very busy with the usual Sunday morning trade and a children's birthday party. Across the street we checked the progress of the new Coffee Corner, but they must be working on the inside. Next door in the other half of the former opticians shop there is now an orthopaedic doctor three times a week (Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday morning). A useful addition to the village. Next we wandered down the main drag to the Drunken Sailor where they had held a very successful table top. On our way we passed by the Drosia which is closed, we will try and find out more about that as there was no dates posted. A quick nip into Pirates for another coffee and some cakes made by Linda in aid of The Smile of the Child. At least three of the palms along the beach are now looking very dodgy indeed. It was drizzling as we left to go home, passing the former Five Roses where Alex now has his chairs and fridges from Crusoes stacked up inside. We managed to get back before the rain really started.

On the tracks above Sfakera the strawberry tree is full of fruit, blackberries still ripe for eating but also in flower. There are cyclamen, purple iris i think, daisy type flowers. Many black butterflies with red and white stripes on wings (red admiral i believe) and some yellows as well. The odd lizard still scuttling about. Amazing, hence i so enjoy my first out of season to date.
