There was a festival 'panayiri' here in Roda for the first time in four years for the 1st of May. The weather was kind and it stayed dry apart from a few spots of rain. It was very well attended with all the tables occupied and the food and drink stalls doing a roaring trade. Six spit roast lambs were soon gone and souvlakia (pork kebabs) were flying off the grills. I counted at least thirty people in the queue for loukamades a Greek a small type of doughnut ball traditionally served with honey, but these days often with chocolate sauce. The Greek band were in fine voice and volume with children dancing as I past by, I could here the music across the bay as I walked home. A lovely extra for those visitors we have at the moment.

The festival due to held tomorrow has been canceled, probably out of respect for the death of a local lad who lost his battle with cancer at the age of 21.

A few photos from the panayiri the other night. It was very well attended with all the seats that had been set out being occupied at its busiest. The spit-roast lamb seller had a good night with all 6 lambs being enjoyed. I have no idea about the number of souvlaki that got eaten, but in multiple hundreds. They had two bbq's going complete with a hairdryier to promote the flames. I tasted them and the loukamades (Greek doughnut), both delicious. There were also grilled corn on the cob and candy sugar for sale.I hope the football team boosted their funds after all their hard work.

I haven't heard if the Roda festival will take place on May 1st this year, it has been a bit of a hit and miss affair depending very much on the weather and the enthusiasm of the local syllagos council. It may this year be affected by Orthodox Easter being the weekend after and people should be fasting. There are trips down to town being advertised for €10 return to see the festivities. If you have never experienced the drama and excitement of the pot throwing here, I'm sure there are many videos on Utube to check out. It is not just in town that pots will be thrown on Easter Saturday as every little village and small tonn will be doing it. There will be midnight services at churches scattered across the island, when at midnight the candles held by the congregation are light one after another from a flame that has been brought from the Church of the Holy Sepulcre in Jerusalem and passed out across the whole nation. It is an amazing sight to witness, with the glow from the lit candles increasing as more and more are lit. The nearest service to Roda is in Acharavi, though when I first came here ther ewas one in our church of St George here.
