I am sure everyone visiting Roda and Corfu is familiar with the sound of the cicadas buzzing constantly providing a constant background to life here. I have rarely seen them, only twice since I have been coming here. Well, we found this one on one of the Yucca trees in the garden and it was obliging enough to stay still for me to photograph it. The sound they make is made by rubbing 'combs' on their large back legs. One cicada can make an awful lot of noise, only the males produce the sound.

Brilliant photos Jan - the noise of the cicadas is one of our favourite sounds of Roda.

Thank you for your kind comments about the photos of the cicada. I wish I could show off and say something like:- It was taken with this camera that cost £1000 at that F-stop focal length and this shutter speed. But it was taken on my fairly cheap and cheerful Samsung point and shoot camera. OK I did use some zoom. It does surprise me with the quality of some of the photos I get though, however I do try and take my time taking the shot.

You never see one, then you see two in the matter of weeks. This one was sheltering from a very windy afternoon on our parasol at Almyros. It stayed there for our entire visit and had to be manually sent on its way when we were packing up.

You did well to spot this, it's very good at camouflage. Excellent photo by the way
