I’m unsure, from the reports, which Monday is being referred to - is it next Monday? In any case, the reports are about Corfu Town, and there is no mention of the resorts. I have to say that other than being an eyesore, and rarely going into Town, the rubbish has had little affect on me so far, a fact reiterated by other local people I have spoken to. But visitors are more sensitive and that needs to be respected and acknowledged for the danger that it brings.
Roda is lucky in that it has a hard core of regular independent visitors who would come here come hell or high water, but we also have a lot of first-time, and occasional visitors who form the nucleus for future business. We are not just affecting this year’s trade, but we may get a reputation for years to come. As can be seen from this year’s European statistics, it is tour operators who decide where people will go and we all know that they will avoid people’s complaints at all costs. To send people here, at the moment, will create a rash of claims against them, and that must have come to their notice by now. Perhaps that is a good thing as it is they who have the financial clout to influence politicians.
I maintain that we still need local initiatives to minimise the impact - something that is easily achievable in the short term, or is there a reluctance to take such measures as it will take pressure of the Prefecture in Corfu Town to find a satisfactory, long-term solution?

Pete's post above is totally accurate - we had a car for a few days this week and travelled far and wide - tourist spots, Corfu town and little villages off the beaten track - the story was the same everywhere - rubbish piled high. We have walked along the beach between Roda to Acharavi and the rubbish is strewn along there too. If I'd been on a cruise ship and been met with the rubbish in Corfu town I'd have bid a hasty retreat too. This morning there were signs that some, not all, rubbish had been removed in Roda.

A lot of it went yesterday, Kath, but I’ver seen people from other villages dumping their rubbish in Roda at night - that does not help. Acharavi has been rubbish free for two days and progress is being made - at least to get us through the summer season. I’ve seen no feedback yet from the visit of the Minister of the Interior.

I originally saw the post on Facebook - I am a member of Corfu grapevine, a bin wagon had been spotted on the island collecting the waste, it was mentioned that it would travel to the smaller villages and collect them before being transported on the massive cargo crates to be disposed of correctly. You get to find out more on Facebook.

I’ve no idea about the beach road to Acharavi, Kath - I’m trying to report on what is happening rather than what is not. Thanks for keeping us updated.

There was an independent rubbish compactor in Acharavi two days ago and I believe that agreements & promises have been made in respect of the people of Temploni. There seems to be a two month moratorium on the blockade and future plans are in the pipeline. Collections are re-commencing, but it may take a few days to return to where we were before. Good news for those arriving next week.

Water shortage expected?

The call comes as the island water company DEYAK is forced to ration water supplies as the island faces drought conditions in August.
Water supplies are to be turned off between 3am and 5am is a bid to conserved supplies and island visitors have been told to use water sparingly during the day.

Where does this information come from, ‘guest’? Is it some resorts, or all? Water supply varies considerably across the island, depending on where you are.

I remember Laurance raising the issue of the storm drain water running onto the beach but not about a water shortage or the bins being emptied, I wait to be corrected. pete.

The "collection point" on the Harbour Bar car park was moved from it's old location to a slightly better one across the car park, next to the sea, all the other bins in the village were moved to the Skafera road past O'arabas, the landfill site at Temploni has been reopened and the bins have now been emptied and there was a digger parked up waiting for a wagon to take the excess away, on the way back from Corfu Town this morning they had started to move the mountains of rubbish also, hopefully in a couple of days things will start to look & smell a lot better. pete.

There has been a definite improvement with the rubbish in the last couple of days around Roda. We noticed that the green general rubbish bins had all been emptied along our route to the beach at Almyros and the blue re-cycling ones were full of cardboard etc awaiting collection. The next day, yesterday, all the bins were empty. Locally there seems to have been a move to gather lots of bins into one area, for example the bins in Roda in the car park and in the Town Hall square in Acharavi.
