Being away most of the winter, I’d forgotten just how much of Corfu’s wildlife comes closer to Roda when there are fewer people. I once posted a photo of these beauties in the river mouth near Makris Apartments. The last two evenings we have been privileged to watch this very elegant female Black-Winged Stilt, feeding in the shallows along with wagtails, plovers and some other wading birds. A little patience, and Jan took this lovely photo:

In addition to the Stilt we watched a week or so ago near the car park, just upstream of the bridge we recently saw a Squacco Heron moving upstream. I have only seen one once before, in the stream near the Afroditi, and that must have been about 12 years ago. For the last week, we have also been listening to a strange, soft rolling bird call, and we saw once a flock of these birds flying over Roda. Today, we were delighted to discover that they were Bee-eaters and there was a flock of around a dozen birds at the back of Elizabeth Apartments.

I to saw the Squacco Heron and have a good photo. I will try to download it next week; not very good at these things. It was with light plumage which apparently means it is either a juvenile or a non-breeding adult. I saw it on several days so it may be there to stay a while. It was easy to see and photo from the Bridge.
