We see so many wonderful places on our journies to and from Corfu, but Corfu Town still takes some beating.
During our recent stay, it became obvious just how much work is currently being carried out on improvements. We probably saw only a few of the sites, but what we did see was impressive. Most notable was the pedestrianisation area at the southern end of the Liston, similar work on the road from the old town towards San Rocco Square, drainage work inside the old port and the completion of the dual carriageway outside of the new port building. They certainly have been busy!
Most fascinating is the uncovering of the base of an old gateway into the town outside what is now Marks & Spencer. Corfu is bidding to become European Capital of Culture in 2021, the next stage of which will be announced in February. We wish them luck!

The European City of Culture for 2021 is rolling along, with Corfu being a serious contender. Fourteen Greek cities have been nominated and a pre-selection meeting is being held in Athens during this week, after which a panel of independent experts will draw up a shortlist of four candidate cities.
Fingers crossed for our favourite island ...
