It would seem that the everlasting mains drainage scheme has found another few million euros, and the beach road to Acharavi was closed this week as work re-commenced. I understand that the project, or at least this phase, must be completed by December 31st.

How far will it come along the beach road? Will the work reach Roda?

It has to reach Roda eventually, Malc, and much of the infrastructure is already in place. Many of the side roads are finished, the pumping stations are well on the way, the main drain in Acharavi was done last year and the outlet into the Corfu Channel was completed a couple of years ago. How far this tranche of money goes is anyone’s guess!

Time marches on towards December 31st, the time we were told that the scheme, or current phase, needed to be completed. The main pipeline continues to march towards Roda with the gang working seven days a week now and all through the day. They are fast approaching Amorossa which is considered to be Roda rather than Acharavi and only pedestrians, if they are lucky, can walk the whole way along the road. When & where will they stop this time?

Clearly, the December deadline has shifted as the main pipeline is continuing to advance on Roda. There is a clear run of about 250m from Amorossa to Eleftheria Apartments, by the road to Venus Apartments, and the workmen were measuring that just two days ago. I would expect them to complete that section fairly quickly, but I wonder how they will negotiate the next 300m to the Coral Hotel.

Having finished the drains alongside navigator in Acharavi, work has recommenced today outside Amorossa. The first pipe is going in as we speak - next stop is Venus Apartments, where the pipe will have to be realigned towards Ammos Grill Room.

An ANEK ferry steams into the Corfu Channel as the pipes for the last road link in Acharavi are dragged into place by Fuego.

With the main drains installed along the beach road to Acharavi, the smaller pipes are going in at a rate of knots at the moment. Tonight, they have reached the corner by Spiros Banos’s shop and are heading inland. We’ll see if they continue up to Valentino’s or turn right by Danny’s farm.

It seems as though the last phase of the drainage installation is heading past Danny’s farm, around the back of Spiros Banos’s villas, and in a ‘U’ shape back to the pump-house by the bridge. They’re almost there, but it will be interesting to see how they cross the stream. After that, it’s hoped that they spend the remaining days tidying up the seafront road to Acharavi.
