So far, Roda has escaped much of the invasion of the Indonesian palm weevil. Dead & dying trees have been very much in evidence over the last 12 months after this pest was first discovered in Greece in 2006. It is also devastating palms across Spain, Portugal, France & Italy and there are fears that it has finally reached the lovely trees along our seafront. Let’s hope not ..

There were signs that some of the palms at Theodoros were affected, but I understand that Theo has treated his trees and everyone is waiting to see what happens next.

The curse of the Red Palm Weevil continues, and on a short walk around the village on Christmas Day, we reckoned that at least half of our palm trees are dead, or affected. It seems that the weevil attacks certain types of trees only, so we may be left with something. This pest has similarly devasted palms right around the Mediterranean and we appear to be one of the last countires affected. There were some signs that our seafront palms were starting to suffer, but they are hanging on at the moment.

Be a shame if the trees on the beach die; it will take a generation to grow new ones that size and they are such a feature of Roda.

I was talking to my neighbor Costas (Roda Park) about this problem, he has lost 2 very nice palms from his front garden, his thoughts on the matter were that because the palms are not native to Corfu then this plague might be nature's way of putting things back in order. pete.

My worries are if no action is taken with these trees by their owners, once they are dead this evil beast will spread to pastures anew. There are so many dead and dying trees as you drive around and many seem to be just left to themselves. It is so sad.

Annie, sadly I think you will find there is no cure once a tree is infected and as it is attacked from inside out the signs do not show until it is too late. The problem is how to eradicate the weevil buy pouring some form of insecticide down inside the trunk. Expensive.

A friend in Acharavi had a date palm that died after paying to treat it. I'm afraid that we in Corfu are one of the last places to be affected, Annie, and trees around the Med. have been similarly affected by the weevil for some time now. Good housekeeping can help a little, but there is no easy cure, although a few of the trees we previously worried about now seem to be regrowing. The weevil seems to affect two main species of date palm, one of them originating in the Canaries. We do have other palms that are unaffected and not every date palm is affected. We thought at first that it was confined to one sex, but we've seen palms of both sexes affected. Maybe nature will select the most resistant and we can rebuild from there. If Kosta's theory is correct, we need to start worrying about our tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines, peppers, apples, oranges and all the other things that found their way to Corfu and still flourish here.
