The majority of places will still be open, maybe one or two restaurants will have closed by then, it will all depend on the number of visitors that are here, there will be a more relaxed feel to the village, you will still have a good holiday. pete.

I love it at this time of year when everyone is winding down and everything is more relaxed and chilled.

The three bars you mention are often amongst the first to close, depending on numbers, but there are others open ... some of them all year.

We have only been to Roda once in October (I believe it was the 3rd week) - Crusoe's was open - often with just Alex and my husband and myself - don't know about Big Ben's or Drunken Sailor.

Alex does vary his routine, Kath - sometimes early, sometimes to the end. Again, much depends on who is there at the time.

Well when me and James were out in October a few years back Crusoes was open every night and we were there a week. You must be misinformed Steve unless however he has started closing odd days. I get the impression that the locals like to go in and unwind, what better place to do that in but Crusoes it's always great fun and Alex and his staff are so welcoming.
You will have an ace time sonjiam happy holidays - I'm very jealous

I find I am posting less and less on the forum these days - and only when I have direct experience or knowledge of a topic. When we visited in October Crusoes was open (we had breakfast most days and a drink every night). At breakfast we had some lovely chats with Sara and Lynne as it was quite quiet and on an evening we were often there with just Alex and George (as it was the year Sara had Spiros I believe) and often some of the locals (taxi drivers etc) would call in to watch a footie match. Kelly and James were there in October 3 years ago and they had a similar experience apart from the evenings were slightly busier but I believe they were there the first or second week in October.
Roda Park was open and Pixieda was open Fri-Sun and I think Nikos Family Restaurant closed during the week we were there.

We were Alex's last customers, 2 years ago. We left on the 11th Oct, so our last night in was the 10th.

As one season ends people begin to think of next years holidays. I have been thinking of Corfu and Roda in particular for a long time and have found this site very informative. However recent comments from Laurence regarding 'open sewers' and the 'rubbish dump' are causing me great concern and making me wonder if choosing another resort on the island might be better for a first time visit to Corfu. Any thoughts?

Hi Barnet.........I have been going to Roda for 30yrs..the area is not a "rubbish dump" it's a few council bins that sometimes overflows, it's never bothered me or my family..I stay at the Afroditi Hotel with the beach just across the road, the locals are friendly, helpful & kind and me being on my own now I feel as "safe as houses"out there, many people go twice a year which I did this year...I am now thinking about next year already and I only came home on the 18th Sept.So try for yourself (I hope you do)..regards Kaz

On the basis of what Laurence is saying, you can be forgiven for thinking that way. But is he correct, or is he pursuing some personal crusade? Laurence mainly patronises the Harbour Bar but, at this rate, he could single-handedly destroy much of their business for next year.
The owners of the Harbour Bar are an established and respected local family who know the way things work in Greece and have some influence. If there are issues here, then why are they not dealing with them personally? Two solutions have been suggested in the shoutbox – namely to get the owners to put themselves forward to the village committee for election, or for Laurence to approach the Syllogos via their Facebook page and make his opinions known. I suspect that neither has been done.
There is no doubt that there is some water seepage on to that section of the beach as there is grass growing alongside the road, down the stream, and in front of the Harbour Bar itself. Some of that, in season, comes from the very regular use of the shower in front of the tamarisk tree and the grass there is lush and healthy. When I looked at the stream a week or so ago, the outlet from the pipe under the road was completely dry, and yet there was clean, clear water further down on the beach. There was absolutely no smell. There were still lots of tourists here at that time.
Since the island started to install mains drainage, as yet unfinished, many anomalies have popped up – like the fresh water that flows out of a manhole at the end of the system in Acharavi. I still believe this is a groundwater issue, exacerbated (‘perhaps', Laurence!) by one of our many burst water pipes. I still don’t think there is a problem for visitors.
In 2010, the UK was labeled the ‘dustbin of Europe’ with predictions that we would run out of sites by 2018. Greece has a similar problem, and it is not confined to Corfu. Remember that we have had high numbers of visitors this year and I described the system for removing rubbish to landfill earlier. Our rubbish is not being collected as quickly as we would like, but it is being collected, not being left by the roadside indefinitely. It is the same across the island, the same in Zante, the same in Athens and the same many other countries.
I agree totally with kaz and I’m confident enough to say you should ignore Laurence’s grievances and see for yourself – you’ll have a great time. I wonder what others think?

I was in Roda during the main weeks and did not notice any smell from this area. Some days it was 'wet' others largely dry. I have no explanation but natural forces seem to be the most logical explanation. As for the ' rubbish dump ' this is a ridiculous description, it is the designated area for refuse collection in the village and unlike a few years ago sadly it is no longer a daily event but no way did it stay for ' weeks at a time ' and this year was collected more regularly than the year before. I know this because I went past it everyday.

I have traveled all over the island this season, even staying down south for a weekend, whilst the bin collection has not been on a daily basis in Roda it's been much better than in many places believe me, please do not let this minor issue put you off visiting. pete.
