hi all,
For anyone thinking of getting married in Corfu in the near future, I thought I would post the steps nescessary to obtain a marriage certificate.
My daughter recently married at Acharavi town hall, and I did the legal bit myself. Although it seems daunting, if you follow the steps, it's quite straightforward.
1, get a date from your chosen venue in Corfu.sounds easy, but to tie the officials down, is difficult, I found they do not respond to email. Luckily we were in Roda in person, and a Greek friend took me to the town hall and translated for me.initially I could not get a date, but a donation to the Christmas party, got our date entered and confirmed on the system.
The actual wedding costs 100 euros, it is not romantic in the slightest, and is akin to hiring s car and signing the forms. The emphasis is usually on the " blessing afterwards or the next day.this can be wherever and as lavish as you wish.some couples go from the beach in swimwear to get the " legal part" done.
2,
In England , make an appointment at your local registrar office.you need to obtain a certificate of non impediment.
The registrar will ask where and when, you will marry, be precise with the venues address.
Your notice must go on display for 28 days at the registrar , so anybody can contest wether either of you can legitimately get married.
If no one contests, you can get your certificates after 28 days, there is one each, and they are £40 each.
3,
Ensure you both have s full birth certificate, and not a photocopy.duplicstes can be obtained for £9 each at your local registrar.
4,
Now you need to have both birth certificates, and both certificates of non impediment " apostled"
This is an official stamp that is attached to the back of the four documents,it proves authenticity.you have to send the documents to the apostles office in Milton Keynes., the address is easily googled. The cost is £40 per document and takes two weeks to be returned.. Please send them recorded delivery.
5,
When the documents return from the apostle office, they need translating into Greek, you must use a certified translator approved by the Greek consul in London,a list of such translators is easily found on the green embassy website.
I used translexis in Wisbech.
This cost £240 including vat, please allow about three weeks for there return.
When they return you will have 8 documents, four English, and four Greek.
Again I advise sending by recorded delivery.
If you lose the documents, you go back to step 1 !!
6,
Now you must travel to the Greek consul in London in Person.. It is in Kensington.
The Greek consul in Corfu Town, stopped all assistance with wedding documents on 1/4/15.so you must go to London.
The charge is £14.50 per document ( x 8 ) . The documents are checked for apostle, stamp, accredited translation, and that there are no photocopies.
Each document then gets three blue stamps attached, and an official stamp.this is the authorisation, for the Greek town hall to go ahead.
Once done, please keep safe. You can now marry.!
I was told that because I had travelled to London for the authorisation stamp, there was no need to be in the country for any length of time prior to the wedding.
My daughter married on the Thursday, and we didn't deliver the documents to the town hall until three days before. This was fine.
Following the wedding you have to return to the town hall after 48 working hours, to receive you marriage certificate, on return to England, submit this to your registrar office,
You need two witnesses at the wedding, they must take there passports with them, the bride and groom must also have there passports with them.
I' was quoted £2200 by a third party to do the " legal stuff"
I did it myself for about £720.
Sorry the post is long, but somebody may find it useful.
If anybody needs any help please email me at

Best wishes.
