Yesterday on a glorious sunny afternoon Sfakera travelled to Skripero to play Ag Athanassios. HT was 0-0 with Sfakera dominating their much younger opponents, hitting the bar and missing several good chances. Early in the 2nd half Sfakera scored with a header following a corner. On the 70th minute the substitute winger doubled the lead with a nice cut i and cross shot. Just minutes later it was 3 as the center forward got possession in the box, rounded the goalie and shot home. On 80 minutes the winger ran some 50 yards beating several defenders before again curling into the far corner to wrap up a comfortable 4-0 win in front of a crowd that had grown to over 40 by the finish. On my watch the referee blew for time 5 minutes early but there were no complaints from any of the players.

This weekend's matches have all been cancelled by the league. They cite a certain problem re arbitration but it is also noted that this weekend immediately precedes the elections of officials due on the 15th.

After a winter break when the weather was fine football returned yesterday in the freezing cold. Sfakera won 2-1 away to Marathias. I wasnt there but it was again feisty as Marathias had 2 sent off (one for punching) and Sfakera one.

I can't reproduce it here though, but both Alex (Drunken Sailor) and Jon (Boathouse) are there.

Last evening under lights Sfakera played a 1-1 draw v Corfu Alexandra at Kanoni. Taking the lead in the 64th minute, resisting the home teams attacks, failing to secure the win with unsuccessful counter attacks they finally conceded the equaliser in the 98th minute. There were 12 minutes added time!

This afternoon Sfekera ran out 3-2 winners on a clear sunny but cool day. The pitch was in shade. Sfakera took the lead after 18 minutes with a far post header from a corner. Several long shots were tipped over for corners and half time it remained 1-0. PAOK equalised on ghe hour after a failed clearance and mix up with the goalie. Sfekera retook the lead on 70minutes with a drilled shot ffrom a loose ball in the box. The 2nd equaliser came a few minutes later after Sfakera gave away possession and PAOK broke quickly and the ball was pulled back and a shot rifled high knto the goal. The winner came in the 85th minute when a cross was headed in after the centre half left the ball for the goalie but a midfielder nipped in to get to the ball first. There was still time for an altercation in the crowd of 34 after a visiting player substituted and in stand abused a Sfakera player. Shortly after PAOK had a player sent off for an off the ball elbow.

Having been to one of the matches, I think these amateur players watch too much football on the TV and believe that is the way to play. So saying that I wish we could get and see more local matches. Trouble is our collective memory is at fault and we forget when they are on!

Yesterday Sfakera lost 4-2 away to Moraiatika. Sfakera played their best football of the season in the 1st half but missed several chances to extend their 17th minute opener, scored by Antonis of Alexandros who has just rejoined Sfakera from Valanio. Leading 2-1 until the 65th minutes when the strength of the hosts, who are league leaders, began to tell and further goals in 75th and 86th minutes completed the score that looks more comfortable than it was.

On a cloudy but warm afternoon Sfakera ran out very comfortable 3-1 winners against Vasilatou yesterday in a very entertaining game. An early freekick was tipped over by the visiting goalie, shortly after a shot by the visitors following a corner clipped the top of the bar. On 22 minutes Sfakera scored following a fine passing move down the left leaving a tap in for Rizos. Taking control of the game Sfakera played some lovely football but the final ball was either overhit or not read by the intended recipient. Finally on 40minutes another move down the left resulted in the 2nd goal. The second half continued in the same way, Jonathan Banos scored from a rebound off the post only for it to be ruled offside. On 53minutes Rizos scored the 3rd again following fine play down the left, on another day Rizos would have bagged a hat trick but failed with some good chances before he was sustituted. Sfakera slightly relaxed with the game won and conceded a well worked goal on 73 minutes. The play remained entertaining until the final whistle.

In a 15 team league every so often teams get a weekend off and it is Sfakera's turn. They are however playing on this coming Wednesday afternoon.

Pete is very much still in Roda, but like a few other former regular forum members decided he'd had enough of rodaonline and has ceased posting and as far as I know he no longer has any involvement - which is a great shame as his posts were always honest and extremely informative.
