Well having been told they weren't playing until 8th January Sfakera played a home game over the weekend. Sadly I wasn't aware of it. The weather was sunny with a light wind. They lost 5-3 to Vitalades and stay 12th in the league; 5 points adrift of the team above them.

Well it turns out Sfakera did play on the 8th though it wasn't shown beforehand in the League website. They lost 4 -1 away to ΓΕ Θιναλίου.

On Sunday the result was Ατρόμητος Άφρας-Ηρακλής Σφακερών 6-1; this leaves Sfakera in 12th still 5 points behind the 11th placed team.

The good news is that Sfakera won 3-2 v Vasilitaka Oh no, so frustrating when that happens, and it has happened to me many times. Usually, as with you, just when you have written a long spiel. Good news about the win though.

The game on Sunday had an 11am KO; the sun had broken through by then and it was pleasant with a light breeze. There was only a maximum of 18 in attendance. They missed a treat.
As early as the 2nd minute Vasilitake had a chance with a free kick 25m out but the shot was well over the bar. Sfakera had there first attack in the 4th but there was a foul in the box following the cross and the defence was able to clear and attack; they shot wide and in next attack were offside. In the 9th the visitors again attack and following the referee playing advantage had a shot from a tight angle that hit the outside of the post before being cleared. In the 12th Sfakera strung together some nice passes but the final ball was overhit and easily gathered by the keeper. Next minute a good cross but Pano couldn't control it quick enough and the chance was gone; maybe he should have tried a 1st time shot. There was an injury break in the 17th after Jonathan was hit by the ball in the groin....ouch!!! In the 22nd the visitors put a high ball into the box but the goalkeeper didn't come for it; the striker crashed into the defender going for a header and the result was a free kick to Sfakera and a delay for treatment following the clash of heads. In the 24th Sfakera swung in a free kick; the attacker completely missed his attempt at a header when well placed and ball went out for a goal kick. AFter several corners to the visitors; all cleared; theyh had a good move resulting in another corner; this time there was a poor punch by the keeper and the ball bobbled about before the visitors had a shot....well wide. In the 32nd Sfakera took the lead.....a long free kick from half way, controlled on the chest by Yiannis who then turned and shot into the corner....1-0. Sadly the lead didn't last even 2 minutes as a long ball through the centre went unchallenged and the striker was able to lob the advancing Nikos in goal....1-1. There were balls into the box by both teams as the half closed but each time they were easily cleared. HT 1-1. Sfakera had just the 1 shot in the half; but at least they scored from it.
Before the 2nd half kicked off there was a minutes silence. It seems news had filtered through of the passing of a famous Greek sportsman.
The second half began with the visitors attacking and in the 47th they hit the post following a corner; taken long, headed back into centre and headed again against the post before being cleared. In the 52nd lot of abuse to Sfakera player from visitors bench; young lad in a hoodie, not even a substitute was shown yellow and asked to go outside the fence area......he was very quite rest of game!! In the 53rd a good Sfakera move resulted in a shot; saved by the keeper. Shortly after the visitors broke and crossed into the box; the goalkeeper left it, the striker got a toe to it and the ball hit the bar before being scrambled clear. Twice in the next few minutes the visitors were given free kicks about 30 metres from goal; the 2nd one after what looked like a strong 50/50 tackle where both players were injured; each time the wall deflected the shot for a corner. In the 58th Sfakera put a deep free kick into the box; the goalkeeper managed to catch it at the 2nd attempt. There was then a delay following a clash of heads after an aerial challenge; the Sfakera player needed some treatment before he could continue. IN the 60th Sfakera again put a free kick into the box; scrambled away; crossed back in but headed wide. Two minutes later another header at goal; this time high over the bar. In the 63rd the ball broke to the Sfakera full back about 30m out and his shot was wide. The visitors broke quickly buut there shot was wide as well. In the 65th following a free kick award to Sfakera the visiting Captain was shown yellow for verbals; the shot was saved. In the 67th Alex's attempted clearance rebounded off a team mate straight to a visiting player; he squared the ball and the striker easily scored to the keepers left. 1-2. The turning point of the game came in the 70th; the ball was out near the touchline 10m from the left goal line; the visiting player try to clear; goes out for throw off a Sfakera boot. The referee gave Sfakera the throw; the visitors lost concentration and the throw was taken quickly; flicked into the box and handled by a defender. The penalty was cooly dispatched by Alex 2-2. A visiting player was so angry and shouting that the referee showed him yellow; as the referee moved to get ready to restart the game he continued his verbals; the referee had heard enough and showed him a 2nd yellow and then the red. In the 73rd a Sfakera player was shown yellow; just one too many fouls by him during the game; the free kick was 30 metres out and went straight to the goalkeeper. Next minute Sfakera chase down a lose ball and get in a shot from 18m but it was wide. The visitors made a substitution. In the 77th twice Sfakera failed to properly clear the ball; it was crossed again and a miss hit header fell nicely to a striker who blazed the ball over. From the goalkick the ball was headed by a visitor; Alex gather the ball and sends a long through ball; flicked on and Pano was through; the goalkeeper came rushing out but Pano slipped the ball past him from 18m to give Sfakera the lead 3-2. The next minute it was almost 4 as a quick counter got the winger on the ball out wide; cutting in the goalkeeper just put him off enough for the shot to roll wide. In the 80th the visitors tried their luck with a 28m free kick but it was easily saved. 84th...Sfakera make a substitution. 86th a visitors free kick from 32m was high over. Sfakera counter from the goal kick but a foul given away in final third; the sub kicked the ball away and was shown yellow. In the 87th a fierce shot by the visitors took a wicked deflection off a Sfakera player and was superbly tipped away for a corner by Nikos; jumping high by the top corner of the goal; he landed awkwardly and required some treatment. The corner was taken short; chipped into the box but Nikos gathered. We then entered added time (there was to be 5 minutes......very rare to get any in this league) during which the 10 men of the visitors tried to get an equaliser. A long shot was deflected for a corner; cleared. Sfakera made another substitution. ANother corner; again cleared; Sfakera break but were offside. Finally a long free kick by the visitors into the box was headed away and the referee blew for time. FT 3-2 to Sfakera. There were 2 shots on target and 5 shots off target by Sfakera in this half. SO three shots on target in game were all goals!! Sfakera remain in 12th place in the league.

Last night there was a gathering of the team and officials in the Neon for the annual cake cutting. After a lovely meal of feta; chips; chicken and souvlaki with bread the cake was cut. It was a very nice cake it has to be said. One lucky player found the coin in his slice. It was a very pleasant evening and a big thanks to Nikos for the invite.

None; on Saturday Sfakera were away to Thella (sp) at Kanoni; this is a Corfu Town youth team (probably U19) and they lost 3-2. They were 2-0 down at HT and staged a comeback but it wasn't to end with a result for them.

Yesterday morning Sfakera lost 4-2 away to Sinarades to remain 12th in the league. Next week they have a walkover win 3-0 against a non playing team, Valenion but whatever else happens they will still remain in 12th position.
