Saw this Russian Naval Ship, berthed alongside, at the Port yesterday. The town was 'flooded' with Russian sailors.
Presumably a courtesy 'PR' visit . . .

We were lucky enough on Saturday to see a couple of ceremonies involving the crew of the ship shown here. They were here to commemorate a shared history with a Corfiot, Ioannis Kapodistrias.Ioannis Kapodistrias was the Greek foreign minister to the Russian empire and helped in the defeat of the French. He was born in Corfu in the eighteenth century, and was the first leader of an independent Greece. The Russian sailors laid wreaths at the Kapodistrias statue at the far end of the Liston and also at a small memorial at the entrance to the old town . Corfiotpoliticians gave speeches welcoming the ship and crew and making reference to their shared history with Kapodistrias. It was quite moving

Thanks for adding that info. <linamou>. It presumably also gives the reasoning behind the name used for Corfu's Airport.

That's right, Chris - Kapodistrias was one of Corfu's greatest sons and his name greets us every time we land here. His family originated in 'Istria' - hence the name - that peninsular south of Trieste where a statue was erected in his memory as recently as 2001.
