You cannot help but notice as you wander through the village recently that there is a lot of remedial work and improvements being done around the place. Necessary roof work has been undertaken behind the Harbour bar with the tiles being removed and the under lying corrugated lining being removed and replaced. Also several places near the Panorama on the main village road have had this done as well.
Yummies , next to Alpha supermarket, has undergone a complete transformation. The original colour scheme has been replaced by a striking black and white one with scarlet accents. Also some internal modifications have taken place with units ripped out and restyled. We caught up with Nikos and got a guided tour. He explained that though he had built the bar up from scratch last winter, and they had had a much better than expected season, he thought it was very important to listen to his custumers and keep a pace with their needs. As he further explained in such a tight and competative environment it was necessary to keep changing to expand the customer base. We wish him well has he has put so much effort into his little business. After a shut down for about he week they are now open again.
Also, after the merging of Mistrals and Oscars they have been working on a new menu, which apparently will be available from this weekend, printers permitting. We are going there with Pete and Debbie for their Friday fish and chips so may have more news soon. Great news for those that love their roasts they will be doing a Sunday roasts as well. Lets hope the new business succeeds and brings more people here.
The Harbour bar has also first trimmed most of the fronds from the huge palm at the entrance, which we thought was it, but last time past the palm tree had been chopped down about 1 meter from the ground, and the trunk was lying on its side. It was massive! We are presuming that the roots may have been affecting their foundations.
Some building work is under way, apart from Pete's house, in that a second floor, beautifully roofed, has been added over Corfu Forward Planning. Not sure what it will be used for. Also, although aimed at the Dutch market, improvements in the form of low concrete walls to the existing stairs at the small Eveline complex between Ammos and Ninos on the Beach. Suppose they will stop people falling off them!
On passing Fiona/ Theodorus twice we have seen new fridges and mattresses being taken in, as well as huge amount of pruning and trimming of the shrubs around the whole site.
In fact everyone is going pruning mad and the bins have regular huge piles of trimmings awaiting the bin men, Steve tells me that this is work usually left until April. Some people are even burning them as they have so much, so there are many bonfires around at the moment.
There have also signs that the council are bringing rocks in to secure the seafront and beach road. The work on the drainage continue near Acharavi as the pipe laying in the sea off Almyros has come to a halt with the grounding of the pontoon that had the crane on it.
In fact if you sit and watch Roda village main street is a busy little road. Will try and report any other changes/ improvements as we walk about our favourite village.
