With the return of the good weather and the return of Nikki & Mike, we decided to visit Porto Timoni on the edge of Afionas, this day out is not for the infirm or the feint hearted, to get there you have to take the left hand footpath just past the church which will lead you to a cliff top trail that starts off 300m above the sea, it's a 30 minute walk over a very rough very narrow winding path that runs between rocks and thorn bushes down to the twin beaches of Porto Timoni. Do NOT attempt this walk without sturdy footwear and jeans as the thorn bushes will rip your legs apart if they are not covered. The walk down is tricky, the walk back up is a killer, but the views are absolutely stunning.......... The start of the path.... Looking back at Aghios Georgios.... From the goat track..... Almost there.... Finally made it.... Views from the twin beaches.... Having a well earned rest.... Plenty of excuses for a breather on the long haul back up.... Keep up girls - this was a good section of the path..... Time for a well earned cold one....... pete.

Whilst staying at Benitses for the Corfu Soul Weekender we took advantage of our location to do a bit more exploring of the south of this beautiful island, our hotel, The Potamaki Beach Hotel.... The "old town" of Benitses... The old town was awash with flowers... And a magical orange & lemon tree!!! Lake Korission, the southern end isn't very accessable, it's quite a walk from where you have to leave the car.... There were lots of wading birds but sadly no Flamingos on this occasion... Sand dunes as far as the eye can see at this end of the lake... Our next stop was the long sandy Issos beach... Onwards to another lovely beach at Marathias, having missed the turning for St. George South!! We felt that we had to call at Kavos having come so far south, like the rest of the resorts down here it was about 2 weeks behind Roda in being ready for the new season... We managed to find St. George South on the way back... It was then time to return to the hotel to sit on the balcony admiring the view... First stop the next morning was the most southerly of the 3 medieval castles built to defend the island, the other 2 being at Kassiopi and Angelokastro, this one is Gardiki castle, situated north of Lake Korission... The northern end of the lake - much better access... Running alongside the lake is the absolutely stunning Halikounas beach stretching as far as the eye can see.... Hopefully Steve will know what these flowers are, they were growing everywhere in the sand dunes... pete.

That looks very much like a Marsh Sandpiper, Pete, in its summer plumage. Next time you get down to St George South, pick a day like yesterday with 60% humidity or less, and go into the town of Argyrades. If you climb the steps to the church, the views are amazing.

Pete, The mention of Benitses, St.Georges South and Lake Korission, bring back great memories and you've taken some great pictures! Must be getting old, as I remember Golden Beach in St.Georges as being much wider, or it could be coastal erosion I suppose. First found this area in 1979 and have had many trips there since. One big difference is that in those days there were only two Tavernas and not much else, progress eh! Also stumbled across a festival in Argyrades on one visit, we were invited to join in and the people were fantastic and gave us free food and free drinks!

You're correct Malc, the main beach at St. George is much wider but we were running a bit late so had to make do with where we were parked up!!!! pete.

Ah the Golden Fox. So true Pete it's one of our favourite watering holes to and how can you ever get tired of that view.
Also so glad Kaz found out who promised to take her to the donkey sanctuary.

Our latest day out took us to Meteora, a World Heritage Site on the mainland. It's an early start and a long journey, 1.5 hours on the ferry followed by 2.5 hours on the coach, but boy is it worth it! The place is amazing, it's like being on another planet, there are about 1000 limestone pillars, each rising 300 to 400 feet above the valley floor and the town oF Kalambaka, there are 24 different monasteries, 6 of which are still active, we got to visit 2 of them, the second one having over 320 steps to get to the entrance!!! The photos do not do justice to this truly breathtaking location..... Each of the limestone pillars have many small caves carved into them, these are where the original monks lived hundreds of years ago.... Because the land is solid limestone there are no graves at the monasteries, the bones of the deceased monks are placed in an Osuary.... The 320+ steps up to the Monastery of Grand Meteora..... pete.

The four of us have wanted to do that trip for years now - but I think a visit in the heat of high summer would be too much. Fab photos Pete - have given us a taste of the place.

Great shots Pete, the monastery ones are awesome, your right, some day out. Over the years the monasteries have been published in all sorts of travel brochures and travel articles, it must have been great to see them

Great photos Pete, again Meteora is a place on my wishlist; definitely one for October or November when it is not so hot for all that climbing. Having seen your photos I'm even more keen to go on a trip there.
