The following News Bulletin comes from the online Greek/English newspaper "Corfu Today", dated 22nd November.
Extreme weather conditions expected
Following is a statement from the National Meteorological Service which warns of very intense hurricane southwesterly Force 9 Beaufort, which may reach Force 10, as well as powerful storms to the west. The Directorate of Civil Protection has informed all relevant Parties, Prefectures and Municipalities, in order stand ready to take all necessary and planned measures to address any potential problems.
Hazardous weather is expected to gradually weaken Sunday Nov. 23.
Batten down the hatches folks the Maestrals, Lavantes or what ever are about to strike. In anticipation of the worse, remain safe everyone. Do let us know if anything happens on this front.
Yeiamas, Chris

Internet has been off most of the day so no contributions from us until now (22:38). It's been rough, but only a bit of the beach on the road - in seven years, we've seen it worse on two occasions. The sea was almost up to the Harbour Bar and the stream by Makris had something like the 'Severn Bore' running upstream. No swimming today, Nikki!! Don't know about southwesterly, Chris - This started from the West and, over a couple of hours, veered around to NNW - I think! - still need to check my compass bearings. It's coming straight at us right at this moment, but forecast to abate somewhat tomorrow. Steve

Wow! It's a pity when it's like that you can't get pics (Steve, you should brave it & go out & get us all pics! ). Hope things are better in the morning. x x

It's not me I'm worried about , jacks, it's the camera. Remember this: Very arty, you might say, but the truth is that, somewhere off Kouloura, the lens misted up with sea-spray and we thought we wouldn't get any pics of the QE2. It cleared just enough to take this, having held it facing the sun for the rest of the journey. I'm taking no chances. Having said that, I did get out when the storm eased a little - photos coming later if they're OK. Steve

Nature or not Steve, that is a very good photo image. I like it. Sadly the old lady has now left us.
Anyway. Look forward to any of the extreme weather pictures you might be able to get hold of if you can.
My original post did say powerful storms from the West. Probably this was meant as an overall direction, which would included SW or NW.

Oh dear! Yeah, didn't think about breaking the camera! Oops!
That is a great pic though, isn't it?!?
Can't wait to see your pics, if they work.

Hi Steve / Chris, everyone tells me that you have to "do a Corfu winter" before you move out there, is this the norm or is it unusual ? Maybe something to do with climate change? pete.

Hi Pete. Friends of mine who live in Peraloudes have now been out there for 3 winters, this being their 4th. A couple of winters ago I remember severe cold weather being forecast which caused concern for water pipes and frozen roads etc. I have not known the winds like this before, although it is not uncommon for anywhere to have adverse weather now an then.
Is it down to climate change. I do not know. Personally I am not one who follows that course. I believe it is another age we are going through, but now we have do gooders who can blame someone or something.

I tend to agree with you there, we lost a lot of jobs at work when i.c.i. jumped on the ozone friendly bandwagon. pete.

Hi Pete - as you know, we have not done the full winter - yet - but every year we are in Corfu, the weather is a little different, as it is everywhere. There may have been two or three storms so far, but yesterday, the temperature in the newspaper was shown as 210C. Still to come could be two or three days of frost, a shower or two of snow, sea mists, lots more rain and some generally lower temperatures. Having said that, spring flowers start emerging in January, this year the bulk of the rain stopped by the end of February, March was changeable and April is considered by locals to be one of the best months of the year.
And then there's the summer ....

Having lived in Corfu for the best part of 20 years, but now have left,i would really reccomend anyone considering living there to spend at least the winter there.I have seen so many people come over in the summer & do not realise that the temps in winter can drop well below freezing & they have rented a summer appartment!!!!!!Snow was a rareity on Corfu mainly to the Albanian coastline but in recent years this has become more regular.Climate change i am not sure.My house had full central heating and was i glad!!

I had to laugh when discussing weather, as you know I returned to England one week before Rob in September. Rob told me that by the time he had dropped me at airport and returned to Roda, it had started to rain... over the next week it rained for 6 out of the 7 days.. Rob had a flight booked to return the same day as me and a flight for the following Friday and he decided to stay... at the time I was sympathtic... now I think it was funny! only because he still grumbles about it ;D This weather is unusual for Corfu and the previous two weeks had been clear blue skies, lovely breeze, completely relaxing sun bathing days... ahhh bliss...
