We did this trip last June, it's a great lazy day out with Captain George's dreamer cruises. You are picked up outside the Roda inn around 9.30 ( the Corner is open by then to get a snack for breakfast ) by Helen for a short drive to the harbour at Astrekari, from there you sail East past Roda & Acharavi, then down the Easy coast to Kouloura where you stop for coffee, from there you sail on to view The White House where Gerald Durrell spent his childhood and which inspired his book - "My Family & Other Animals" and to see some of the breathtaking houses along the "Gold Coast". Lunchtime brings you to St.Stephanos where there is ample time to wine & dine. Then it's back on the boat for a leisurely cruise back to Kassiopi for a chance to shop, sightsee or just chill out at a kerbside cafe. Back on the boat then for the return home with a glass or two of ouzo, wine or juice. We were treated to a singsong by a great gang of Roda regulars on the way back ! (ouzo's fault was that ?) All in all, a great way to spend a lazy day. Pete. KOULOURA THE WHITE HOUSE THE SEA DUCKS OF ST.STEPHANOS THE GOLD COAST

Sitting quietly one day at 'Galini', in Ag. Stefanos, watching the boat trips come in over a plate of sardines and a beer, and a rather 'far-back' accent wafted over the ether - "of course, the problem with buying one's paintings at Sotherby's or Christies' is all that **** commission."I am so glad that my poverty protects me from such problems! Somehow, Corfu manages to find room for all of us ... Steve

Every time I hear the Durrell family mentioned, my mind swings off into action (a rare things these days), but I am always reminded of the BBC made for TV programme of My Family and Other Animals. The version with Brian Blessed as Spiros, and Hannah Gordon as Mum of Gerals when they are all on Corfu. I have the DVD compilation, and on a number of occasions we have sat back and watch all the DVDs from beginning to end. The remake they did of a very shorten version back a couple of years has nothing compared to the original.
I have always been interested in the Durrell family as they were local to my home town of Bournemouth, actually only living about half a mile from my home now. There house is still there, after Margo passed away last year. My mother was Nanny to Gerald Durrells children, and lived at that very house.
I have most books of Gerald Durrell, including some of his mentor in the early days, Theordore Stefanides.
On my last visit to Corfu, I traced most of the Durrell story that made up the book and programme, My Family and Other Animals.

No wonder you like Corfu so much, Chris.

Tell me, Chris, as our expert on the Durrell Family, am I correct in assuming that, when the family first sailed to Corfu, they did not sail down the straits between Ag. Stefanos and Butrint, but they sailed down the west coast to Asprokavos and back up to Corfu Town. If so, why?

Hi Steve. In all the literture that I have read or seen, Calabria (Calabro) appears, which is situated on the south easter tip of Italy. This is where according to the writings such as "My Family and Other Animals" the Durrell family sailed from this area/port, heading east across part of the Med, and into the Ionian Sea. This would have pointed them in the direction of the West Coast of Corfu, therefore bringing them south around Kavos, and up the South Easter coast to Corfu Town.
Hope this gives a good explanation for you.

I always forget that if you sail west from Corfu you reach Calabria - and what a fascinating land that is. Has anyone read Annie Hawes' book 'Journey South'? Good book for a holiday read. One bit I remember is, in spite of laws to the contrary, scooter riders with helmets are stopped by police and questioned because they maybe trying to hide their identities. Those without have nothing to hide and are allowed to pass! ;D
It seems that Corfu is not the only place with some quirky ideas.

Calabria is lovely town, with lots of quirkiness about. Have read the book also, and agree, not a lot of difference when comes to the funny laws.
