My Recent Holiday to Roda
It is a few weeks since I returned from Roda and many holiday reports have been added since then, so with my conscience pricking me I decided I had better post mine.
Well it started from the moment I left the airport. Steve met me outside arrivals, after a quick coffee at the airport we drove to Garitsa Bay. A quick change and we were diving into the warm Ionian Sea. OK walked down the steps! A quick dry off followed by lunch of sardines, Greek salad and wine in the tavern overlooking the bay. I had arrived in paradise.
This set the tone for the rest of the holiday. Every day we would have a frappe and a pie, and head off, a salad packed for lunch. We explored the top of the island from Arillas in the west to Nissaki in the east. All points in between to include Sunset beach, and swimming in Canal d’Amour (very cold). Places that need a special mention are the beaches at Kerasia, Avlaki, and Agios Stephanos (east). My favourite being Avlaki,a fine shingle beach, warm sea, a shop and a taverna, nothing else. The return to beach was Almiros for swimming and salad. Also must mention the British cemetery in Corfu town. A haven of peace and quiet with lovely flowers in heart of Corfu town.
Evenings were spent sampling the delights of tavernas in Roda. We made a good attempt at sampling them all, with Greek dishes a must, followed by the quiz night at Crusoes. If we managed to finish our meal in time!
We got into the mountains with a trip up to Old Perithia, were we drank beer and ate Corfiot olives in dappled shade overlooking one of the churches. We also went up to Nemfes for souvlakia, OMG what an experience. Delicious food eaten overlooking the village green, with all village life laid out before you, heaven.
We did a boat trip with Maggie as hostess. Hugging the beautiful north east coastline we stopped three times for swimming off the boat and a longer stop on Nissaki beach. Cold drinks and apple cake in the shade overlooking the beach.
The holiday finished with a stop off at the Emeral bakery on way to airport. I had bougatsa and frappe, a perfect way to end a perfect holiday.
