The severe weather across eastern Europe seems to get little acknowledgement in the British media. Over the last couple of weeks, extreme weather has crippled parts of Italy, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Greece and Ukraine, and some 80 people are believed to have lost their lives.
This report today from E Kathemerini:
Dozens of villages around Greece have been cut off due to heavy snowfall in some parts of the country.
Around 90 villages in the area of Trikala in central Greece have been snowed in.
Ioannina airport in northeastern Greece has been closed due to the snow.
The fire service has helped to get several people suffering from illnesses to the hospital.
Trucks have been banned from driving on the national roads while the cold snap lingers.
The weather has improved in Athens but it is continuing to snow in northern and central Greece. More low temperatures are expected next week.

Have heard they opened the Olympic Stadium in Athens for the homeless to take shelter from the extreme cold last night. Also heard a report that it snowed in Barcelona today. I am being a bit selfish and hoping the snow doesn't cross the channel.

Its had plenty coverage on the BBC - both radio and tv news have highlighteded the fact that we are enjoying better weather conditions than many of our friends in europe.

All medias are reporting the sever and extreme weather across Europe, today and yesterday, with the loss of in excess of 200 lives, mostly those who live homeless. Sad nevertheless. The worse is to come, including the UK tomorrow night through to Sunday. Keep warm folks, and keep that heating on. Oh yes, do check on your neighbours, in particular the elderly.
