for the lavraki i suggest the shingle beach, from the coral hotel to acharavi /for smaller fish the harbour is ok off.the breakwater dependant on the wind .you can hire a boat but need to get well out . most are edible but talk to the local fishermen no permission req.my policy is if its not silver dont touch it but you can still eat it

sthelenssaint,
sorry to disagree, but a licence is required to legally fish from a boat anywhere in Greece. I know many people still do it out of ignorance or indifference, but they should be made aware of this and decide whether to take the chances or not.
Licences are available from the Greek Port Authority, I think they are around €30 for two years and you will need your passport, two passport sized photographs and a Greek tax number (AFM)!!! All persons fishing should have their own licence, and I also have heard that the boat should be licenced for fishing too, but cannot be 100% on this.
As you say though, it is legal to fish from the harbour/ breakwater area and the beach without licence, but be careful of swimmers etc.

I think this is correct but, in the very best Greek tradition, it is often ignored on the basis of 'live & let live'. Fishing from the shore is fine, and there are people who will take you out in a boat. I understand that this does require a special licence but trips do take place & I don't know anyone who has got one. The locals who go out in boats can, if I remember correctly, go as far as 2km, but I guess that has a price too. Beyond that and you are a serious fisherman and I think the annual fee is something in the region of €8,000.

Could there be a little confusion here between ''Fishing'' and ''Angling'' ?? Many areas are marked on Charts as 'No Fishing' but this refers only to Commercial Fishing with the use of nets or 'Long Line'. For us who take great pleasure in 'drowning worms', with a small number of hooks employed, this does not apply ( I'm only talking of sea fishing here ). As far as I am aware the only 'Licence' required for boat anglers is the one that the Boat Operator must have to carry passengers ( Passengers are defined by their status of having to pay for carriage). National laws are, of course, different for each country but the Laws concerning their Sea-Ways and fishing grounds are pretty standard throughout Europe.( EU Fishing quotas etc ). I may be wrong on this so I'll start digging for more info.

Hi Y'all, seems I may well be wrong. Fishing from a boat more than 300m from the shore requires a licence.( Still not sure of definition used for fishing ) but I've found a useful bit of info at the following :- FISHING IN CORFUsorry I haven't put this as a Link, IT skills not up to that yet. Hope this helps ... Johno

Thanks for that Steve, this page would have been very useful for a very 'fishy' Riddle last year! As usual with the Riddles I'm a few months late !! Saint, have you tried Wrasse ?? I found a recipe for Wrasse many years ago and after a trip to Berwick I tried-out this most surprising fish ! A real nightmare to de-scale and clean but the hard work was definately worth it !!! Delicious !!

Should not have mentioned grayling, John - so many happy memories of the 'Lady of the Stream.' Good to eat too!

I've never eaten grayling although I have managed to catch a couple of small specimens when trout fishing. Just a word of warning ... if any of our intrepid anglers do happen to catch a Scorpion Fish, or anything that looks remotely like it, wear gloves when handling or only grasp fish by the belly. The Scorpion?weaver Fish can give a very nasty sting from the spines which can, in extreme cases, cause nerve damage. If you get ''pronged'' and you intend to go seeking medical aid, take the fish with you if possible to get a positive ID ( no Janiemou, you don't ask it for Possport/Drivers Licence !!!). 99 times out of 100 it will prove to be a Gurnard but if you're not sure ..... ask a Local !!
