Just a reminder to everyone that if you intend using the ATMs whilst on holiday you need to let your bank know before you travel.
I was in my bank yesterday and they told me that because of the amount of fraud going on they are likely to put a stop to my card if they see it being used abroad without giving them prior notice.
This did actually happen to us a couple of years ago with a different bank and it was a real pain trying to get hold of them to get them to reactivate the card. Nikki

Good point Nikki, we got caught out 2 years ago with that one. Couldn't use the ATM. We had to phone our bank and it took 48 hrs before we could use it!! Luv Jan X

Thats very interesting - I went into our Nationwide branch a few years ago as we use their charge-free service for withdrawing our cash in Roda and was told there was no need to inform them of our travel plans! To their credit we have never had a problem (to date) but very frustrating when you are hearing/reading conflicting reports. I had a telephone conversation with them last week about a different issue and again raised this point and was again told I didnt need to inform them. However I always make sure I take all of my contact information in case the worst case scenarion arises!
regards, Kath.

The bank that it happened with a couple of years ago was Barclays and the one I'm using this year is Alliance and Leicester and they've told me to make sure I let them know.

Wouldnt you think all banks would have the same policy!? Very frustrtaing for us mere mortals! I am going to mention this again when I'm in Nationwide in the coming weeks and will be interested in their reply!
regards, Kath.

I wish I was with Nationwide. I'm with the Alliance & Leicester because of the interest that they're paying me but I'm not impressed with the amount of commission I'll be paying whilst in Corfu. Opening a Nationwide account was something I intended doing but I'm sure somebody mentioned ages ago that they'd stopped doing the no charge thing for new customers

Hi Nikki - I think Nationwide will still do a no-charge Flexaccount if they think you are using it as your main account and not just for holiday money. I used to advise business owners never to have one supplier of their main stocks or materials - the same goes for money - never use just one bank - keep your options open.

After reading on another Corfu forum that lots of the cashpoint machines on the island seem to be often "empty" can anyone reassure me about the ones in Roda - we have never had this problem in the past but if it is going to be a problem would like to have a contingency plan in place.
thanks in advance, Kath.

Hi Kath, we used the atm's nearly every day for various withdrawrals and never had a problem, always plenty of money in them, always plenty of ink so that you could actually read your reciept, balance slip etc. unlike in the u.k. pete p.s. - failing that Kath, you could always run a tab up at Crusoes !

Thanks for that Pete, we generally do run up a tab at Crusoes - one night we even left without paying - I was mortified - next day Alex shrugged his shoulders and said "no problem we knew you would pay next time you came in" - cant wait now we are all ready for this holiday - Kelly and James are even counting the hours now!
best wishes, Kath and the gang!

Kath - I rely totally on ATMs and I have just this minute returned from the Emporiki cash point by Loft Car Hire. There was no problem. People like Brinks do the servicing of these machines and I sometimes machines do get emptied. It is more likely to be a Brinkls pro]blem than a bank problem. I heard a similar story about the Alpha machine recently so I will try that one on Saturday. Because of the European economic crisis, people sometimes panic unneccessarily and reports appear on the internet that assume there is a major problem. They are often overstated.
