It was in March 2008 when Steve and I discovered the delights of Opa Taverna in Roda for the first time. The first day of Lent is celebrated in Greece, with a National holiday when families get together, fly kites and traditionally, eat fish.
It was our first experience of Kathara Deftera (Clean Monday). Not knowing what was expected, we hadn't reserved a table at the only other open restaurant in the village. So, we ambled the streets, took photos of everyone on the beach with kites of all shapes and sizes and ended up outside OPA, the restaurant which used to be the lively bar "the five roses".
Yiannis and Eleni had opened the restaurant in celebration of the start of Lent. We ordered Bourdetto (traditional Corfiot Dish of fish in a spicy tomato sauce) and kalimari. There was special bread with halvas (sesame seed sweet) to start.
The meal was fantastic and thoroughly enjoyable. We have since been back many times and always enjoyed the food we have. Yiannis is passionate about his cooking. He makes skartotseta to a recipe that his grandmother passed on. Wonderful slices of beef rolled with freshly chopped herbs in the middle, served in a fresh sauce. Opa is the only restaurant in Roda which serves this dish.
I am sure that we'll be back at Opa next year for Katharo Deftara and on many other occasions.
Have you eaten there too?

We ate there in June and were really impressed. Eleni was very friendly and the food was great. They were happy for two of my children to share an adults sofrito and I had the lamb opa which was to die for Nikki

That's our Shirley Valentine table, Steve And Shirley Valentine is back!! We have just returned home from our first evening meal of the season at our favourite table in ... OPA! Today, Yiannis and Eleni opened the restaurant for the summer. With their daughter Mary, having finished school for Easter, Eleni & Yiannis decided a week ago to make the restaurant ready for today. We just had to be there on their first night. Being the first night of the season, there was a limited but extremely tasty menu: - Sofrito, Pastitsada and the house special...Skartotseta! It was an easy choice a bottle of retsina and two skartotsetas - not each of course! We sat, looking over the beach, watching the ferry in the distance on its way to Italy. The food, as always was delicious and it was certainly good to be back at our favourite table. At another table were people who had not been in previously and although they will be returning to the UK tomorrow, they will be back on their return in June. With my Mum & Step-dad arriving on Monday, Opa's opening is timely - no doubt we'll be in there a few evenings and lunches during their stay. George will start work at Opa on 1st May. To find out more about Opa - visit their page on Roda Online OPA

your Shirley Valentine table is next to our favourite table. We always head for no3. Perfect for looking out over the sea to Albania and watch the ferries go by. Bev.

Hi. We ate at the OPA for the first time this year. As Steve had recommended the Skartotseta we went for it and it really is something else. As my husband and myself are getting on a bit now, we gave the chicken pastisada a miss!! Ask Steve, he will explain!! JackieM
