Several years ago, walking into Messonghi every evening, we would hear a piercing sonar bleep high in the trees. Being dark, we couldn’t see what it was but it echoed through the trees by the river and tormented us for nearly two weeks. Everyone we asked had either never heard it or they denied all knowledge of it and we could not believe that we were the only ones listening.
One day, we tackled our travel rep. who was a fluent Greek and Essex speaker and lived in Corfu throughout the year. At first, she too claimed not to have heard the sound but, when pressed, she reluctantly told us what it was. It was, of course, the Scops Owl and we have continued to hear them ever since and learned to distinguish the different pitch of the male & the female. So what was the problem?
The story was that it is unlucky to hear the Scops and we were led to believe that everybody, at least in Messonghi, pretends to hear nothing rather than push their luck. Have you heard one, or are they just another Greek myth?

Hi, 2 years ago we heard this noise night after night and thought it was an owl but never saw it! The noise continued every night for about a week. Later we heard it very near us and went out to investigate, we found it had been making a nest in the cooker hood vent hole on the outside wall!! The cover had broken and we had not replaced it. The following day my husband did replace the cover and after a few night the owl went away. My daughter looked on the internet to find it was a scops owl. On telling many people about it(Greek and English) no one would admit to having heard this noise or the name of this owl. As Julie knows a tale of woe has followed Myth I truly think NOT Margaret
