A word about car hire - While my mum & step-dad have been here, they chose to use the Air-miles Scheme to cover their car hire and while it can be a good idea to use this scheme to pay for car hire during a holiday, there are a couple of questions which need to be answered:- - is there a charge for additional drivers?
- is there an excess waiver & is it cost effective?
- what is actually covered by the insurance?
- is there a charge for arriving at the airport at an "unsocialable time"?
My mum's experience has been with Avis. - It charges an additional 4 euros a day for a 2nd driver!
- It does offer an excess waiver but the amount for it per day amounted to nearly as much as the excess, so it was decided in this instance, not to take it out.
- Insurance cover was the usual, underside of car, wheels, including tyres excluded by cover.
- Avis would have added a charge if the time that the flight came in was considered "outside of normal operating hours"
All the above, if taken up, would have been charges that were payable locally when the car is collected or in the case of the additional driver at the point when the 2nd driver was added to the contract (and not covered by the Air-miles scheme). It is always advisable to double check what will be included in the price quoted at time of booking for car hire. The following links are to Nostos Travel & HN Travel both of which offer car hire in the village and have good reputations. It is worth mentioning that Nostos Travel uses Loft Car Hire, also in Roda. We have personal experience with Dromeas Car Hire. Spiros & Miriam offer FULL insurance cover, at no extra charge. There isn't a charge for additonal drivers. I think maximum number is 3 drivers in total (all must produce full drivers' licence). So, it is always worth checking with the local car hire services in Roda and also, if one of the large multi-nationals is used, check the small print before booking, even if Air-miles are being used.

Every year we hire a car for a few days to `explore`the island... and we book during our stay. Only once we made a reservation in advance in Holland , and we were very sorry .... We also had to choose the days in advance, and we had a heatwave with temperatures over 40 degrees C. Driving was not much fun... The hostesses in the hotels/apartments always try to persuade people to book a car through them because otherwise they will not help you should you have problems... Maybe they have a point because of the language problem, but will they really help you out or is it just a way to "blackmail" us? I think this year we will be booking a car ourselves, why not trust the local carhire companies?? And since we met an old friend in Roda last summer (Loft carhire) ,we might get a discount as well ;D

We booked a car through NSK last year when we got there. Much cheaper than rep. Lovely car, no extra charges. For this year we have looked at Dromeas and Corfu Hire cars on their websites. Corfu looks good but we will be booking when we get there. Bev

Don't forget that Dromeas is one of the only car hire companies to cover you for damage to the underside of the car and incidents involving tyres or wheels at no extra cost. Check out the small print in your contracts - we've never found anyone else to do this.

Hi essexboy - the car hire companies are only just opening up for the season. We spoke to Miriam at Dromeas yesterday and she had just answered all her emails. She had been without a VDU and hence the delay. Dromeas offer full car insurance including the underside, tyres & wheels - very few, if any, others do this. From today everyone should be in place, so hopefully you'll get your questions answered. If there are any queries we can help with, then let us know. As you are coming out on Monday, it may be best to ring Miriam or Spiros on (0030) 26630 64661. One or both will be at the office every morning and they should also be there from 4:00pm UK time.

on subject of dromeas . ive just emailed for a quote . do they pcik and drop off at airport? as somecharge etc ? also i know most car hire companys allow minor driving penaltys my dad who will be driving has 3points from 4-5 years ago or so. hopefully they accept this?
Taxi is £45 each way so of its only going to be £130 or so for 7days car hire it seems more worthwhile.

Don't think the penalties will be a problem, Luke. Airport parking used to be free - we left our car there last year for two weeks with no charge. There are now charges for parking, although they are minimal - even the car-hire companies have to pay, so I guess they will pass this on to their customers. Don't worry, it's not as expensive as the UK! I'm sure Spiros or Miriam will reply soon as they are now there every day. How are your mum & dad? - we look forward to seeing you all soon.

I had points on my licence during one visit to Corfu, and nothing was said, and I had only had them for a few months. A minor offence I might add.
According to the Directgov website, if it is a minor offence, the endorsement only last for four years. Check out the link, ENDORSEMENTS AND PENALTY POINTS
Have a great holiday anyway.

Hi smooth, welcome to the forum. That's a bit more difficult because of all the luggage. We've been talking today to Rena from Nostos Travel who will soon have a separate page on the website. She has access to over 40 vehicles and I am sure that there is something to suit your needs. Email Rena on ekostaki@otenet.gr and see what she can do. From what she tells us, the insurance cover is very good also and we know that Nostos try in everything they do to be the best in the village.
