The plan has changed and the first hole for the first inspection chamber appeared this morning in the old village road. It looks as though all the access chambers will be located first and then everything joined up. The work commenced outside of 'The Crown'.

Roda's new drainage scheme is steaming ahead today and it's quite impressive. As an excavator opens up the old village road, the continuously welded pipes are rolled into the trench and a skid-steer digger follows on just 50 metres behind filling everything in. At 4:00 pm they were outside the Vassia shop and still going strong. The archaeologist was watching every move and it is understood that a discovery was made by St George's Church which might mean that this road was previously much narrower. Most of Roda's residents are quite excited by the prospect of being connected to mains drainage.

Please, please, please, Dean, can we get a sense of perspective in all of this? There are not two sides to this story, there is fact and there is speculation. Our aim on this web site, on matters of importance such as this, is only to report what we see and what we are told by responsible and informed people. If I were to speculate on anything, it would be that the people who awarded this contract were well aware of the impact of an overrun on Corfu's most important fiscal contributor - tourism. Who are we to assume that this factor was overlooked or ignored?
When I look at other forums, I read messages from 'Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' about the current sanitation arrangements and it would seem now that the perpetrators of this scheme are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
The schedule of the project is determined not by metres of drains laid, but more by days available to do the work and there is little evidence that Parkinson's Law is in operation here. I have seen the archaeologist standing in one position all day, under an umbrella in torrential rain, while the work carried on relentlessly. These are determined people and I would not be surprised if there is a penalty clause in their contract for non-completion. I estimate, based on the work in Roda so far, that the contractors are laying about 100 metres of drains each day - excavated, laid and backfilled and this takes account of the fact that a coffin was found below the street and work was halted.
Everybody in the village that we have spoken to is welcoming the new scheme with open arms, there is little negativity about the progress, only optimism about being brought up-to-date. This is in spite of the fact that their livelihoods depend on tourism, that they have to drive or walk to their homes from different directions and they have gaping holes outside of their front doors. It is up to each of us to examine what facts we are given and decide whether our individual bottles are half full or half empty.

Work on the drainage scheme is pressing on today, even on a Sunday. Having looked again this morning, I think that the progress is probably nearer to 50 metres each day. This would mean that the section from behind Corfu Forward Planning, right down to Spiros Banos Apartments, should take about one week. The pipes for this section are already in place as are the ones for the short road past Harlexy's Apartments. No other sections have been worked on yet.

I do apologise for having an opinion that differs Steve, but you do not have the monopoly on speaking to "responsible and informed" people though, and I, like Mac, have heard differing views on the timing of the work being carried out. Whether it is completed on time, who knows? But I sincerely hope so. I really do.
Just to say, a forum by definition, is a public meeting place for open discussion or voicing of opinions and ideas........ Perhaps worth remembering sometimes?

NEVER ON A SUNDAY!
15 years after the death of Meliina Mercouri and they are proving her wrong in Roda. The contractors were working again today and were still here at 17:00.

A section of new mains drainage scheme was completed today between The Crown and the end of the road between HN Travel and the bakers. Individual connections will take place next year and all that remains for this year is to let the aggregate consolidate and lay a covering of tarmac. Where will they go tomorrow? - we'll have to wait & see.

Today, I learned a new word - 'ossuary' - a place where bones are laid. It seems that, so far, the remains of five people have been found in the old village road, three of which are outside of the 'Smile' supermarket. Archaeologists were at work today removing the remains from that location which are believed to be provisionally dated at 500 years BC! - That is over 2,500 years old and about the same era of the Temple of Apollo, just a short distance away. Work resumes tomorrow morning - and the question is, do you want photographs?

Maybe we should get the Most Haunted team over to Roda, there must be quite a few spirits wandering about, I'd happily join them in an investigation!, joolsd
