Talking about Myron's chickens made me think about the quality of chicken over here. In the UK, we stopped buying two birds for a fiver a long time ago. The quality of supermarket chicken leaves a lot to be desired and all those antibiotics ...!!
Our local butcher in the nearest town in Wales supplies tasty, free-range chickens from a farm near Hereford on the Welsh borders. The smallest bird costs about £6.50. In spite of its cost, we think our health is worth a little extra and, if we're careful, we can get three good meals out of one chicken - about £1 per portion.
This week, we bought a chicken in Corfu. Clearly prices have been rising here also, but the quality - of supermarket chicken - is really superb. The first thing we noticed was the yellow skin in contrast to the 'albino-looking' birds in the UK. Presumably, the birds are corn-fed to some extent and the taste was quite different.
There are no special 'free-range' projects here - this was everyday chicken from a low-cost supermarket. The pro rata cost was £4.72 for a 3.5lb (1.59kg) bird. By my reckoning that is 27% cheaper than the nearest equivalent in the UK, and I think this chicken was marginally better - we'll even make a stock out of this one!

... and if you don't know where to find the village butcher's shop, it is by the traffic lights right opposite the Tropicana:
