Eat a doner kebab and you will be loading your body with saturated fat & salt to an unacceptable level with the average kebab providing half of the recommended daily intake in one hit. So said a report in the UK press last week. The Greek equivalent is the gyros pitta, but are the two products really the same?
Some years ago, I visited a small kebab manufacturer in west London who was struggling to make ends meet. He was the man responsible for compressing all of the meat into those recognisable vertical spits that are grilled and sliced to order. He was delivering his kebabs all over the south of England and making about £2 profit on each one. Imagine the pressure on him to incorporate other ingredients into his products, much as sausage makers do – all that connective tissue and other unmentionables.
Having got used to the type of kebabs in Corfu, I look at the ones in the UK and shudder. They are nothing like the layers of fresh meat, built up on the spit before they are grilled, that you find over here. Here, the meat is meat and not a combination of other meats and animal products. Here the meat has a natural flavour without having to add unreasonable amounts of salt and I wonder whatever happened to the guy in West Drayton trying to scratch a living. As with all food products, quality is variable and you need to check out what you are buying before you commit. In Corfu, you can still get the real thing – and very tasty it is too!
