There has been an increase in cases in Greece since tourism opened on 15th June...........we are now at 3432 cases with 192 deaths in total. Almost 50% of the increase is 'imported'. A worrying sign that ill people are still holidaying and prepared to spread illness rather than isolate. I'm sure the Greek Health Dept are watching closely.
Lot of talk locally that if lots Tourists do arrive the locals (unless they working there) will avoid the main touristy spots completely. There is a concern...not a fear......as it has been so safe here to date.

The situation is getting worse here in Greece (not so far on Corfu). Nearly 60% of the increase in cases here are tourists.........last two days have seen 110 new cases with 67 of them tourists arriving in the Country. Greece says health comes first and are considering new lockdowns.........so on arrival you could be forced to self isolate. This is what press says...........
But holidaymakers could find themselves in lockdown on arrival as Greek authorities consider re-enforcing public and travel restrictions from as early as Monday.
The local authorities say that safety guidance for the coronavirus is being frequently ignored and government spokesperson Stelios Petsas said that they were "determined to protect the majority from the frivolous few."
Inspections of bars and restaurants are to be stepped up with health officials becoming concerned over the number of “asymptomatic” cases among foreign travellers.

it is now 3967 cases and 194 deaths in Greece; since tourism the numbers have been increasing and around 60% of the new cases are tourists.
As a result from today (Saturday 18th July) it is now compulsory to wear a mask in a supermarket (staff and customers).
The story in the Mirror is a bit of make believe ------if 30-40 people in the 6,000 Brits due this week test positive then they will stop all flights to Greece from UK. Its taking up a comment that the Greek govt are putting health first and will not hesitate to close tourism down.....they already have with Serbia. However no numbers were mentioned......the problem here is the health service......some Islands no hospitals etc. Corfu has one but only a limited number of beds and Ionnina is fairly busy due to some northern villages having problems with the virus.
So lets hope the initial arrivals all test ok.......mind you some are a bit 'thick'. On Greek tv news they were asking British arrivals at airports if they had had tests themselves before flying out........one woman said she had had a test and it was positive......before quickly saying....oooh sorry I mean negative and repeating that several times. Crazy.

Well nearly 1,400 tests on UK Nationals on the 15th and nearly 1,500 on the 16th and all were negative which is a great start. Ironically a Brit who travelled via Paris to Greece did test positive as did one arriving in Cyprus.
Tests will continue....they are particularly testing those coming from Birmingham and Manchester.

WIth the number of new cases fluctuating but still much higher than before tourism re introduced (yesterday was 52 new cases) the Government have brought in new rules re wearing masks. These apply from TODAY.....
The new measures come into effect from Wednesday and will require masks to be worn by everyone inside retail shops, offices, banks, food stores and bakeries. Churches are excluded for the time being.
Please observe these rules............there is a fine of 150€ if caught not wearing a mask where it is obligatory.

Another big day yesterday with 57 new cases in Greece. A lot of tourists amoung them.
A Corfu TV channel yesterday quoted there having been a total of 19 cases now on Corfu since the virus began, mostly residents returning from abroad and tourists since 15th June .......it didn't give breakdowns or locations.
So my advice is that Corfu is still safe......but not as safe as it was a month ago. You need to think safe and be alert to stay safe. Follow the rules re wearing a mask and as tourists; and therefore likely to be in areas where there are mainly other tourists; please make sure you social distance. Avoid crowded music bars and any other pop up events designed to bring in crowds......a water party in Dassia was stopped by the police yesterday and the organisers arrested. Find quiet spots on the beaches or find the smaller less touristy beaches....they will still have a taverna or two but be less populated.......a chance to visit somewhere new......nearby we have Asteraki, Agros, Almyros....all are walkable.
Stay safe and enjoy your holiday.

From today cruise ships can dock at corfu..........none are scheduled as yet and it maybe 20th August before we get any as there are major conorvirus concerns as to how to operate a cruise......how many people.....isolation areas.....tests etc.
If I am in Corfu Town when there are Cruise ship passengers being taken on a tour I will more than social distance from them......

I usually avoid Corfu town in the summer, too hot and crowded, especially in the narrow streets of the old town. It will always be a gamble letting the cruise ships in, but the town depends on the income they bring in. I will certainly be following the advice to always wear a face mask.

Yes there were a couple cases in a group of 5 people from Roumania a week or so ago..............all 5 elected to be quarantined. There is also word around that there is 1 reported case in Roda (i've not seen anything to confirm this in the Corfu Press).........they too will be in quarantine.

There were 5 cases on Corfu yesterday...........reports say it includes 2 cricketers. Word locally is there is one case in Roda.
It is now mandatory to wear masks on open air decks of ferries and ships; though they have increased the capacity from 65/60% to 85/80% respectively.
Most of the new cases in Greece are in Attica area where there have been problems before; total now 4737 cases and 210 deaths.

There will now be a 20€ charge for using medical services on the Island.......so be prepared if you need to visit any medical centres in Roda. This is due to the virus and extra pressure on these centres.
