Just wondering if the garbage collection had been resolved yet. I know the Roda volunteers have given their time and put a lot of effort in 👏🏻 But wondered what the situation was overall now the season is beginning?

Hello Maudy,
The situation is that the landfill issues are still not resolved and unlikely to be soon as elections are due. However the garbage is nowhere near as bad as last year. There are now over 20 recycling centres around the Island run by volunteers including the one in Roda (on the road behind the Pegasus Hotel) and one in Acharavi. The impact of these is considerable and as the word spreads the more they are used. Meetings have been held with business owners invited to encourage them to sort their rubbish and save for recycling; as they are busy there is a collection service for them.....I guess more businesses will sign up to this once they open fully for the season.
In Roda and most places there are new rubbish bins. These are labelled in greek to indicate recyclables and non-recyclables. It is the green bins that have the recyclables as you can see by pictures on the labels. I don't think there are enough bins but they will suffice if more businesses use the recycling centre and if those who use the bins fold up carboard boxes and crush plastic bottles before putting them in the bins.
Around the Island you still will see the odd overflow of rubbish or some piles on the roadside but in most areas they are being removed slowly. Other places have places where rubbish can be put that is not so evident or visable on the main roads.
I am sure that you will notice a big difference from the situation we had last summer and although the season hasn't really started I don't think it will be anywhere like it was last year.
IN Roda/Sfakera we have had two mornings of cleaning the beach and the roads and they are looking nice and clean as the season starts. The seaweed has yet to be removed but there is not so much as there was last year. On Wednesday there were several people not only sunbathing but also swimming. The road up towards Sfakera has been partially cleared and we plan to finish this on Saturday morning.
