Good morning from Roda. We have lost the few clouds that were around last night. So we have clear blue skies a negligible wind and the usual haze such that Albania is reduced to feint outlines and ridges. The sea is calm and silent. I must say though, that apart from those beaches that have shallow waters, the sea is much colder than we would expect for this time of year. However, it is lovely once you are in. I was only saying to Steve yesterday, as I entered the sea at Almyros and started swimming, that if I had jumped in the sea from a boat, I would have immediately reversed the action, comic book style! Heading for the beach again, trying to get as much in as we can before heading back to UK next month, when the summer will be over for us.
Yesterday was another lovely summer’s day. There was a slight build-up of clouds over the mainland that had the cheek to spawn a few fluffy cotton wool balls our way for the evening. There was a miniscule afternoon breeze that put a ruffle on the otherwise calm sea, but it gave up the ghost as evening approached. There was a enough humidity that made over-exertion a no-goer which persisted into the evening. There was me saying that the cooler nights had arrived and we got yesterday’s very balmy evening. The Ammos Grill room was full as we went passed at 10 o’ clock with locals and visitors enjoying the best part of the evening. The sunset was another stop and stare as we got to the end of our lane. The whole western sky was a pink haze, almost seamlessly joining up with the sea. A returning small fishing boat looked as though it was suspended between the sea and the sky. The bright yellow ball of the sun quickly set turning the harbour waters the same colour before the sky melted into a peach curtain, before turning the sky orange once the sun was in its bed. The clouds had kept their distance from the sunset but weren’t needed, and they hid some of the stars in the night sky, but there were still plenty around. It was lovely sitting in the village enjoying a glass of wine, watching the bats flittering around gobbling up the dreaded mozzies. A pleasant stroll back enjoying the lights around the bay and the flat calm sea whispering on the beaches. The temperature at 10.00 am on Thursday 22ndt. August 2019 was 24.3°C. Real feel 25°C and dew point 19°C.
Yesterday's maximum temperature was 26.8°C (real feel 29°C), and the minimum was 20.3°C, a dew point of 23°C.
The maximum temperature this day 2018 was 29.5°C (real feel 33°C and dew point 24°C) and the minimum 21.5°C. A sunny day with clouds from time to time.

We have now reached that time of year were the sun cream has to appear, so easy to burn with this high UV.

Good afternoon from Roda. A late report due to a futile visit to the consultant for a prescription, he had to dash to Athens, and there was no point in coming back home. So the only thing to do was go for coffee and a bite and head to the beach while the sea is still lovely and calm. As always you get talking to friends and time slips away. We also have over 4 litres of our tomato sauce on the go as well as a pan full of yellow tomatoes which will become jam by tomorrow. After my report I will start preparing the vegetables for our pasta dish tonight, all this when it is 30°C in the kitchen with doors and windows open.
This morning dawn clear and hot, with no wind a calm sea and a deep haze that Albania could barely rid itself of. There was a deep blue band in front of Albania where there must have been enough wind to stir the surface. The humidity was down, but it didn’t seem to have any effect on the humidity or the haze. It felt hot and clammy, with a complete failure of the afternoon breeze to come and give any relief. Clouds gathered over the mainland and some headed our way. Not enough to interfere with the sun or even add to the sunset. The sunset, by the way, was of the ‘oh my god, fantastic variety. We never tire of standing in awe and watching every single one of them. The humidity may have gone down, but it didn’t do anything the alleviate the clammy feeling or disperse the haze. The clouds stayed during the evening, but there were plenty of gaps for the stars to shine, and they were joined by all the village lights on the Albania coast and ours around the bay. We were out late last night and it was good to see Roda in a different light. Nino’s son Yiannis was dancing his heart out outside his dad’s restaurant, surrounded by flames and shards of broken plates. The street was blocked, and there was a lovely atmosphere. A quick drink at Pirates which was winding up for the disco crowd before heading home to bed.

Good morning from Roda. And so, the hot summer weather continues and here we are sitting out on the cool north balcony in 29°C eating our breakfast enjoying the relative cool and the lovely view we have. Albania is all but lost in the haze, the wind is negligible, the sea is quite ruffled and I can hear waves hitting the shore line. It is going to be another hot day and the only thing to do is drink lots of water, and stay cool. It is feeling quite humid so don’t rush around, it is a perfect excuse to take life easy. The countryside here is tinder dry as it has been so long since we had rain. There was another big fire down in the south by Lefkimi that had some villages evacuated as a precaution. The fires were soon put under control and finally extinguished.
Yesterday was hot, feeling humid, with only a gentle breeze and the persistent haze. The afternoon breeze did come but soon wore itself out and any wind or air movement was gone by the evening. The sea stayed lovely and calm so we had some much-needed swims. That water still feels cooler than it should do! Some clouds crept over from the mainland but didn’t interfere with the constant sunshine. We enjoyed the standard amazing sunset, which led onto a warm and humid night with lots of stars in the clearing skies. The many lights around the bay were joined by a floating palace of a cruise ship. It was a warm 26°C at 11pm.

Good afternoon from Roda. For some here the summer is over and they have departed from whence they came. I am talking about the swallows, swifts and martins. We had a couple of days when they were washing and preening on the wires near our house then they were gone. I expect there are still some over Corfu Town, but here they have flown the coop. This morning saw the usual haze almost hiding Albania, the flat calm silky looking sea, a gentle breeze and a clear sky. The only time it feels cool is just after dawn when the temperature is still in the low 20’s. Unfortunately, the oven is soon turned up, and with the current humidity the sweat starts pouring with the least activity.
Yesterday followed the course of the previous days, starting clear and cloudless with a gentle breeze. We did have more and larger waves than before, preventing us swimming at Almyros. The clouds gathered over the mainland, including some thin high stuff, and then drifted quietly towards us. We had the usual pastel sunset that turns orange before giving us only a few stars in the sky. There were still quite a few lights around the bay with those of Albania trying hard to join in. The evening though was very warm with the temperature at 11.30pm 26°C!

Good afternoon from Roda. Another busy and exceedingly hot session at the recycling at Acharavi. Apart from some lazy people who left there ‘recycling’ outside the compound over the weekend, most people who came with their recycling were interested and eager to learn. Despite the heat Steve and I enjoy it and were kept busy for the whole two hours. After which we need coffee, cold drinks and some food, followed very quickly by a swim. The sea was not co-operating and the rollers were coming ashore, but we did get in for one swim at least. Next re-cycling session back at Roda tomorrow morning early for the businesses. They are going to do an information piece on Corfu TV as a general education and explanation of what the twenty odd centres do.
The day dawned very hazy with Albania just a ghost on the horizon, and even our hills were fading away. There was a breeze, but not very effective, and the sea looked calm, but we could hear those waves hitting the shore. These waves only affect a meter or so as they hit the beaches, you don’t have to go far out before it is lovely and calm.
Yesterday was very hot and humid, though the actual temperature wasn’t that high the high humidity made it feel like a sauna. I was so concerned about the disparity of my readings to those posted around Corfu so I put three different types of thermometer out on the shaded front balcony a meter or so apart and they all read the same. I will just have to accept that Roda is just that little bit cooler than the rest of the island thankfully. We got some slight relief from the afternoon breeze, but it was marginal and we wilted into the evening via a glorious sunset. We emerged from our lane just in time to see this golden ball light up the sky, the sea and the damp sand by Sam’s boats (now Achilleas’s boats). There were lots of stars around because the clouds that had built up over the mainland hadn’t got as far as Corfu. There were hardly any Albanian lights joining our around the bay as the haze persisted. It was a very warm evening with the temperature at 11pm 26°C, a two fan night for the bedroom!

Good afternoon from Roda. This morning was our usual 3hour shift at Roda recycling centre. We were kept busy for the whole time. On recycling days I have no problem doing my 10,000 steps! Dawn flushed the sea and the sky orange with the mountains of Albania in relief. The picture was enhanced by the Minoan ferry gliding to Igoumenitsa. It always feels nice and cool and fresh at these early hours, but the heat soon comes back. The breeze was nice and gentle as was the sea which had waves whispering their arrival on the shore. This afternoon we were on the beach at Almyros when our attention was drawn to a fire in a valley behind us. It was unusual as it was low down the mountainside, with houses above it. Two Canadair planes soon arrived and water bombed it, until it looked like most of the fire was out and the ground crews could finish off the job. We have only had three very short episodes of rain since the beginning of June. The olive groves are as dry as tinder, so a fire spreads quickly.
Yesterday afternoon was hot and sunny, with the afternoon breeze coming and going almost without being spotted. The sea still had waves so difficult to get in for a swim at Almyros. The clouds started building up over the mainland with one or two escapees managing the journey to us. There were still one or two migrant birds around at Almyros but not seen any still in the village. Sunset was pretty but quite muted despite there being a backdrop of clouds. The heat continued into the evening giving us another balmy one, with plenty of stars and lights around the bay as the haze retreated a bit, to create an attractive picture. It was still 25°C T 11.30pm.

Good afternoon from Roda. This morning we went to nemo for our FGT and had a chat with friends and stayed for lunch before heading to the beach. It looks so different sitting there in the shade of the tree looking towards the new build at Robolla. The ground under the olive trees has been cleared and it looks so open now. Rumour continues that they will be building there with the road diverted to the left. We can only wait and see.
The morning was pretty much like every other morning that we have had recently. A pleasant 2 2°C feeling fresh, with clear skies a bit of a breeze and a calm looking sea with quiet waves. It doesn’t take long for the heat of the sun to be felt and the humidity start to kick in. I checked and we have had only three days with some rain since the beginning of June, no wonder the ground under the trees is tinder dry, even the dirt tracks are getting dustier and looser as they dry out. The fire planes continue to circle regularly, no real surprise as we had at least two fires on Corfu yesterday at Portes and Lefkimmi.
Yesterday afternoon stayed hot and sunny with the breeze strengthening to create some waves. They allowed only one swim at Almyros, but we were distracted by the fire at Portes and watched the fireplanes put it out. There was a build up of clouds over the mainland with a few brave enough to cross the channel. Their presence actually did nothing to enhance what could only be called a so-so sunset. It was clear in the evening as the humidity reduced and we had plenty of lights around the bay and a well-illuminated cruise ship to add interest. It was a humid 25°C at 11pm

Good morning from Roda. We have a very hazy start to the deal. Albania seems to be floating in a sea of mist across a very calm sea that hasn’t the energy to make any noise. The breeze is also so tired as not to do more than play at it, the leaves on the trees are barely stirring. It was lovely and fresh first thing with a pleasant feel, but as the heat racks up together with the humidity it is starting to feel sticky. The continued dry spell isn’t good news as fires continue around the island and on Albania.
Yesterday stayed hot and hazy all day until the evening. The morning breeze strengthened as usual during the afternoon increasing the size of the waves. There was the usual build up of clouds over the mainland, some managed to get as far as us together with some thin high ones. There wasn’t enough to add interest to another lovely but not outstanding sunset. We are still without a moon at night so we had plenty of stars and lights around the bay and across the channel. The night sky was lit up by a ribbon of fire heading up a mountain ridge above Saranda.

Good morning from Roda. It is a slightly more humid start to the day. We have clear skies over us, but there are some clouds stuck over the Albanian mountain tops that don’t look very threatening. There is quite a haze, but Albania does have some detail. There is the merest of breezes and we have a clam sea that doesn’t make a sound when coming ashore, well not one that we can here. It seems we are going to have another lovely summer’s day, however there are signs of autumn all around. Most of our summer tourists of the feathered variety have left, leaving a few stragglers dotted around. The horse chestnut trees are laden with conkers, blackberries are ripe on the brambles and the trees are starting to turn brown. The pair of sparrows nesting in our roof have raised their third and final batch of chicks and have gone to join the flocks that roost in the trees and bushes near us.
Yesterday was a lovely day again. The gentle breeze that we had in the morning strengthened in the afternoon as usual. An strong gust sent our parasol sailing up the beach! The sun shone in a cloudless (more or less) sky and the sea was warm and calm. What more could you want. We again got some clouds over us at sunset, but the sunset, though very pretty was not spectacular. We then had a warm starlit evening during which we joined friends for dinner at Niko’s Family Taverna for their Greek night. It was just the perfect temperature to enjoy all the dancing in the street.

Weather Good morning from Roda. The early morning clouds have melted away to the mainland, where they are stuck on the mountain tops there. Albania itself is barely discernible in the haze across the flat calm looking sea. There is a very dark streak near to the far coastline where the winds are, but here the sea is pale blue and quite glassy looking. Having said that I can hear gentle waves coming ashore. There is almost no wind to chase this haze and humidity away so it should be feeling a little humid, but we think it feels quite fresh. Maybe we have got accustomed to the very humid weather we had recently, so this feels pleasant.
Yesterday was lovely and sunny for the most part, however in the afternoon we started to get a steady build up clouds that came between us and the sun at times. By the time we got to early evening we had nearly total cover. The clouds didn’t work their usual artistry and the sunset was pleasant with a very diffuse pink hazy effect. The afternoon breeze had lead to an increase in the size and number of waves but by evening the had settled into the ultra-long ones that seem to be the length of the whole bay. It was a windless balmy evening with the temperature at 11.30pm 26°C, which felt like 28°C with the high humidity.

Good afternoon from Roda, and kalo mena for September. We had a steady morning at the recycling centre and were kept going for the whole two hours there. In fact, the tidying up afterwards took us another quarter of an hour. Back home for a quick cuppa before heading out for a well-deserved breakfast. They always taste much better when you have worked up an appetite. We bumped into Dave and Linda and family so had a quick catch up and said goodbye for another year to Bella who is heading back to Athens and school.
This morning the high humidity and haze continues with Albania not having the strength to make any sign of appearance on the horizon. There was also quite a scattering of clouds around, hiding the sun occasionally. There was barely a breeze and the sea looked a little ruffled with some waves coming ashore. This high humidity is making the temperature feel much higher than it is at its maximum and the dew point (how comfortable you feel) will be high so it feels very humid and oppressive. It also is bad for those who have chest problems as the high humidity makes it more difficult to take a breath. Yesterday felt very hot and humid all day apart from that lovely brief period just after dawn. The clouds started gathering quite early and by late afternoon the sun was finding it difficult to find a clear spot to shine. There were many clouds caught up on our hills will a heavy haze coming down the valleys and even trying to hide the mountains themselves. There was quite a stiff afternoon breeze which gave us white horses out to sea and waves closer to shore. As the wind died away these waves we reduced to long low rollers. It wasn’t the best of sunsets which led onto a very humid evening. The clouds had cleared enough to give us some sightings of stars between them. At 11pm it was 25°C with a real feel of 26°C and an uncomfortable dew point of 21°C.
The temperature at 9.00 am on Sunday 1st.September 2019 was 23.0°C. Real feel 24°C and dew point 19°C.
Yesterday's maximum temperature was 28.9°C (real feel 34°C), and the minimum was 22.2°C, a dew point of 25°C (very uncomfortable for most people).
The maximum temperature this day 2018 was 28.1°C (real feel 32°C a lovely sunny day but very hazy.)
The reported UV for Today is 7 (Range 1- 11+) UK range 1- 8 The UV Index does not exceed 8 in the UK (8 is rare; 7 may occur on exceptional days, mostly in the two weeks around the summer solstice). We have now reached that time of year were the sun cream has to appear, so easy to burn with this high UV.
DEW POINT Less than 10°C feels dry Between 10°C and 18°C Feels comfortable Between 18°C and 26°C Feels increasingly humid and uncomfortable. At the highest it is unhealthy and even fatal for people with asthma
RODA AND CORFU TEMPERATURE EXTREMES The maximum temperature recorded by me in Roda in 2018 was 33.0°C real feel 35°C on 8th.June real feel 35°C. The minimum temperature recorded by me in Roda in 2018 was 2.9°C January 25th (not forgetting we are away for two of the coldest months) The maximum recorded temperature ever in Corfu was 42.8°C The lowest recorded temperature was -8.8°C

Good afternoon from Roda. We knew there would be a lot of work this morning at the Acharavi recycling centre as bags had been left outside the gates. What with them and a constant stream of people coming with their recycling we were kept very busy for well over our two-hour shift. We had a quiet sit and some water when the Greek volunteers took over from us. It is hot dirty and hard work, so, after a quick change of clothes we headed for coffee before going for a swim. A nap was called for when we got back.
Today dawned very cloudy with hardly any blue to be seen. We had a lot of haze with Albania missing in action across the channel. There was a feeling of calm as we had a quick cup of tea, with there being barely a breath of wind and a calm sea. However, the breeze soon started to rustle the leaves of the poplars across the field.
Yesterday started off quite nice with plenty of sun, but the day did get increasingly cloudy and hazy. It felt very hot and humid with many people finding it all very uncomfortable. The afternoon breeze came and went without giving any relief. The sunset could have been painted by Turner, think all muted shades and extremely hazy. The clouds did clear a bit in the evening to give us a new moon and a smattering of stars, but it was still very humid and only started to feel more comfortable late on. It was 25°C at 11.30, feeling much warmer than that.
The temperature at 9.30 am on Monday 2nd. September 2019 was 24.6°C. Real feel 25°C and dew point 22°C.

Good afternoon from Roda. Yet another busy day, this time at the Roda re-cycling, it gives one a nice feeling when the re-cycling is so appreciated by some people. Three hours though is quite long, so home for a quick change then an equally quick coffee before hitting the beach and a refreshing swim. This morning saw Albania still absent on the horizon, only detectable by the crown of clouds around the mountain summits. Our hills were veiled in a deep haze due to the continuing high humidity. The sky was pale blue and dappled with clouds. There was barely a breath of wind and the sea was glassy with a few small fishing boats heading back to harbour. The only time it feels reasonably fresh is just after dawn and last thing at night, the rest of the time it is humid and sticky.
Yesterday saw a steady increase in cloud with the blue sky rapidly diminishing. By mid-afternoon we had total cloud cover and distant rumbles of thunder. We could see rain showers to the west and over the mountains, which were covered in clouds. We packed up after one all mighty crash of thunder and then the rain found us. By the time we were driving through Acharavi the heavens had opened and the streets were awash. It had eased by the time we got to Roda, so I don’t think it had been as heavy here, judging by the puddles. Then almost as quick the rain had ceased. We found out later that Sidari had had no rain, much to the disgust of a Roda shopkeeper, who had to go home to water his garden! We got a patch or two of blue sky and a smudged sunset. Feeling cooler due to UV being hidden by clouds. By early evening the valleys steaming. The evening saw the usual disappearing act of the clouds to leave some stars sparkling in the sky, joined by the lights of the bay, but not of the Albanian villages.
The temperature at 11.00 am on Tuesday 3rd. September 2019 was 25.7°C. Real feel 27°C and dew point 23°C.

Good afternoon from Roda. Art times I feel that I would have more time if I went back to work, if they would have me! This morning we had the cardiologist for my tablets and an FGT. Stayed chatting long enough to enjoy a coffee and a ginger beer and some lunch. The sea beckoned, and I’m afraid it won. Though to be sure it was disappointing that we could get a swim, so back home to finish dehydrating olive leaves before grinding them into powder for a health drink. As I type Steve is loading the dehydrator with cherry plums.
This morning saw a reduction in the haze, and Albania deigned to make a bit of an appearance, though there was still quite a lot of haze around as the humidity is stuck on high! There was just enough of a breeze to stir the leaves on the trees, which are rustling now as autumn approaches. The sea looked fairly calm, but I could hear some waves making it to the shore. It was still feeling relatively fresh, but the humid feeling was increasing.
Yesterday stayed extremely hazing with Albania staying absent from view until the evening when the lights of the biggest village could be seen. The speckled clouds that we had had first thing retreated to the edges and never completely went away. The afternoon breeze brought us white ponies out to sea for a while before both ran out of steam by sunset when there was no wind and barely a ripple on the sea. It could barely must a whisper as they came ashore. The sunset brought us dramatic clouds to the east with the reflected pink light, and a fuzzy one to the west. The evening saw the skies clearing and a crescent moon and lots of stars in the firmament. The day however felt very hot, humid and muggy, making exertion very tiring. We were glad of a reprieve at the end of the day.
The temperature at 10.00 am on Wednesday 4th. September 2019 was 25.0°C. Real feel 25°C and fresher feeling dew point of 20°C.
Yesterday's maximum temperature was 27.3°C (real feel 30°C), and the minimum was 22.7°C, a dew point of 23°C (uncomfortable for most people).

Good morning from Roda. Apologies for there being no report yesterday, we had a day off and headed to Vidos Island as neither of us had been, which was very surprising considering how long we have been visiting Corfu. The boat to Vidos does have a timetable but doesn’t stick to it too religiously, but at €2 for return trip you can’t complain. Yesterday was a lovely hot day, much hotter in Corfu Town than up here in the cooler north. There was just a hint of a breeze in the morning a cloudless sky and Albania making a determined attempt at getting into view. The sea was flat calm, so the swimming at Vidos was so lovely. It stayed that way with sunshine and clear skies until some clouds started drifting over from the mainland. It was quite cloudy by the time the sun went to bed in an uninspiring way and stayed cloudy for the rest of the evening. There was a gap or two that allowed the half-moon to shine, but there were few stars in evidence. The haze didn’t allow the Albanian village lights to shine, but we could see two separate fires on the flanks of one of the mountains.
The temperature at 9.00 am on Thursday 5th. September 2019 was 22.0°C. Real feel 22°C and fresh dew point of 16°C.
Yesterday's maximum temperature was 27.9°C (real feel 30°C), and the minimum was 20.1°C, a dew point of 20°C.
The maximum temperature 5th September 2018 was 26.2°C (real feel 28°C a cloudy start to the day becoming sunny)
This morning it feels quite warm as we have a southerly wind blowing through the house. The dry leaves are furiously rustling on the trees and the sea looks ruffled, though I can only here gentle waves coming ashore. The sky looks cloudless at first sight, but there is a profusion of thin high streaky ones. I have had a bit of a major disaster in that my weather station has packed in. Giving fresh new batteries and a strict talking too hasn’t altered the blank screen. I will have to look in Acharavi today to see if I can get a replacement. I am lost without it. Today’s maximum temperature last year was 27.7°C ( real feel 30°C a mostly sunny day with a few clouds later on)
The reported UV for Today is 7 (Range 1- 11+) UK range 1- 8 The UV Index does not exceed 8 in the UK (8 is rare; 7 may occur on exceptional days, mostly in the two weeks around the summer solstice).
