I’ve said before that the UK seems to fall well behind other European countries when it comes to recycling and, having visited several countries in recent weeks, I think the divide is getting greater. Travelling around the UK, there are no two places that are the same and I’ve yet to find a single town where recycling is taken seriously.
The neat banks of segregated disposal chutes that we first saw two or three years ago in the Costa Brava, can now be found in increasing numbers all over Europe. We have yet to find a single one anywhere in the UK. According to a report in ‘Enemerosi’ recently, they even have them now in Corfu. Some people in Corfu believe that the island makes no effort to deal with recyclable waste but, by mixing our rubbish, it is often us, the waste producers, who make it impossible for products to be separated. We all have a part to play in this global issue … residents and tourists alike.
It would seem that Italy now requires that every business provides individual bins so that the separation of waste products takes place at source. Bars, motorway services and even campsites, now have a whole range of bins for just about every group of waste product. Customers all contribute to the solution by separating their waste products as they are generated and it is so easy. To support this initiative, the waste bins on our campsite in Rapallo were emptied by the council every single day, and this is all part of concerted effort that benefits us all.
Of course the first thing needed is recycling plants to process the plastic, glass etc, or contracts with Countries such as Sweden who could take and recycle. Without this sadly there is little point. This should be a priority here in Greece as it will create much needed employment.
Needless to say such plants should not be small and localised but on a National basis; for example not needed on every Island if at all but where they are have say plastic plant on Corfu, then put glass on Kefalonia etc, so as to spread the employment opportunities and not spoil an Island with several large plants.
The people need educating but that is easier if there is proof if real recycling at work. I see the recycled plastic is being used to make roads in some Countries; i haven't seen if that would work where summer temperatures are high. However there are other options. Greece need to start big in this area due to the volume of plastic bottles used.
You can sense a willingness amoung some that is growing; the 'lets do it' campaign spreading across communities in Greece for one; other groups or individuals cleaning roadsides, beaches and footpaths. This just needs to grow and then recycling and how we dispose of rubbish becomes easier. A process that will take many years.
