It may only be January but the signs of approaching Spring are everywhere. The days are starting to draw out noticeably, and the UV is climbing from 1 to 3, so that sun feels warm when you get a sheltered spot. The plants are yelling at us that warm days are just around the corner. The mimosa trees are just about in full bloom, covered with clouds of bright yellow tiny ball-like flowers, the almond trees are following suit with drifts of fragrant pale pink blooms. In the olive groves and in gardens we are seeing an explosion of daisies and camomile flowers, wild blue irises, drifts of delicate multi-headed narcissus. Not to be out done we also see large carpets of small marigolds opening their heads whenever the sun touches them. Pink 'dovesfoot cranesbill', the wild form of pelargonium's, also vie for attention amongst the 'little dorrit' and the delicate pale blue of the tiny 'birds eye'. Closer to the sea we are finding great splashes of acid yellow wood sorrel nodding their heads in the slightest breeze, even flowering on recently unearthed sea grass. They must be salt tolerant. That is just what we have seen today.

In Sfakera there is crysanthzamen, bright yellow, in full flower in a large pot outside a village house. My daffodils are in bud ready to bloom in near future.

The leaves of the wood sorrel, are heart shaped and 3 are at top each stalk. They are edible, as they are or in a salad. They have a slight citrus taste. I used some tonight as a garnish on the top of my home made fish pie. They grow everywhere here, ìncluding in my garden. The leaves are so distinctive, and that shape not shared by any poisonous plant, there is no way you can make an error in what you are eating. Here are a few flowers around my house.
