It seem to me this year that OXI day signalled the end of the 2017 season and the beginning of winter. Many hotels and apartments had just closed, were closing or were due to close around then with the last one in Roda, The Roda Beach Hotel, finishing on the 1st of November. We had our usual walk into the village yesterday, hoping, as Steve has already said, for our Sunday breakfast. Pirates was quite busy and it looks like the food will be on for a few more days at least. Linda is still baking everyday for the 'Smile of a Child Charity', it is getting difficult to ignore the tasty goodies both sweet and savoury. She must have collected around €2000 this year for the charity.
Progressing towards Skouna there were several tourist shops open including Agas the jewellers and Corfu Best Travel agents. More of the jeweller later. Roxannes had a good amount of customers enjoying lunches and coffees, as did Skouna. All in all the little beach road was quite busy. The beach had a few walkers strolling along in the late summer sunshine, and an intrepid swimmer swam in from quite far out. However, back to the jeweller, Nikos Agas was there with his boat, while someone minded the shop. He was there sorting out his nets and fishing paraphernalia, getting ready for the winter fishing.
Along the main road from the crossroads, Oscars, Drosia, Dimitri's Grill Room, and Nemos are open, as they will be for the winter now. Express supermarket and Panaiotis supermarket will also be open. Sandy's Arms by the church has started its winter opening hours, open Thursday to Monday evenings. At the crossroads, Pixida, Coffee Corner, Tropicana, O 'Arabas and the paper shop are open. Most of the businesses along the main road, and around the crossroads are not tourist shops and they remain open all year, with the exception of the soap shop.
These first few weeks after the last visitors have gone always seem strange, but eventually it settles down and becomes the norm. There is now time to catch up with friends busy during the summer.
