So the Old House/Pangalos/Kind Hearted Place is to become a Spanish named all day beach bar? How is it looking and is it also Spanish themed? Can't help thinking I will miss the restaurant, it was one of my favourites. Opening some time in June apparently

Yes it opened yesterday. I haven't had a look at menu yet but will do so soon and post. The place is very smart, nice furniture, superb tiled flooring. Also put out beach furniture behind.

As I was in the village yesterday afternoon I decided I would give La Luz a try. It is very stylish with an airy bar, and restaurant, two terraces and so many sun beds spread across the beach down to the sea. They have plenty of staff, one or two of whom have familiar faces, but I am so bad remembering names! I counted up nearly 50 customers between the bar and the sun beds. There are, naturally, still some teething problems, such as delays in getting served, including I was informed for the evening meals, but it is very early days, being the first day of opening. I am sure it will improve as the staff become used to everything. There was one note of caution, in that I went passed La Luz at around 1am and the music was very loud. The other businesses around will complain to the sound police as the sound proof doors are supposed to be in place by midnight. Hopefully it was just an oversight. We will all watch this bar/restaurant as it develops in the village with interest.

Roda's bar owners probably do have the ‘nous’ to cater for the very traditional British market, John, but a large proportion of our visitors come now from other EU countries where designer ales are in big demand. I’m not sure if many of our bar owners ever visit those countries, so how would they acquire the ‘nous?’ In any case, even though your favourite pubs may concentrate on pints of beer, it doesn’t mean that everyone does. Younger drinkers in the UK are switching over in ever-increasing numbers to these very ales that you don’t believe in, and I know of one Wetherspoon pub in Wales that sells a modest 200 ales per day. This equates to almost 60 million ales per annum across the chain if everyone does the same thing. This is a very significant trend that provides massive opportunities ...

what gives you the right to assume i dont believe designer ales .my local, which holds awards both nationally and locally[for its ales] serves so many different ales that it would take to long to sample all of them .i visit the east coast of england on a regular basis and ale there is varied from strawberry flavour to chocolate stout . my point is that why would the people with" nous" want to buy in ales that they have stuck in the fridge all season ,show me the market research you have carried out amongst the other eu countries to vindicate your opinion. like i said in a previous post i have visited most of the countries in the med and north and south america , and the most popular drinks are usually their own brands, otherwise its usually bud, becks or heinekin .if you have so much faith in your theory open a bar selling these products and show the bar owners of RODA ,nay CORFU how it should be done .

Intresting listening to the'designer ales' discussion. Many bars in Roda do sell them in the form of bottles from Corfu Brewery, Arilas. Roxannes sells the full range which are unfined and unfilted, other bars and restaurants sell a limited range. They produce a Real Ale, a Pilsner, a Gold, a Bitter, a double fermented ale, an India Pale Ale and a Weiss beer. The beer list produced by the brewery is usually on the tables at Roxannes. I always call for a bottle or two as a change from Mythos and see other customers drinking them as well.

I’m pleased you actually acknowledge that the market exists, John, so why deny visitors the products that they might want? In the last four years we have probably visited 200 supermarkets across maybe ten European countries and we’ve walked around possibly 100 towns or cities. The sheer variety of quality food & drink available is mind-blowing by British standards - it may not be market research, but it’s as plain as the nose on your face! Craft ales are conspicuous by their absence in Roda, other than the excellent ales from Arillas. Steve

of course the market exists but in my opinion not in roda in your head yes. over the years bar owners have tried all the gimmicks and tricks to increase customer throughput ,dont you think this would have possibly come to mind at some stage. and i dont have to be a roda expert to know that "designer ales"are absent from the bars in roda as sure as i know there is a nose on my face.the owners have been in this trade for a little time now ,and i respect their knowledge and acumen. certainly keep peddling your pet project but lets leave the running of bars to the professionals ,because i certainly would not tell you how to run a forum

What is the general opinion of La Luz now it has been open a few months? Did there continue to be an issue with loud music late at night? Some mixed reviews on TA but I will still judge for myself in 4 weeks!

La Luz is getting mixed reports from the visitors here. Quite a few are be-moaning the loss of the Paangalos/ Kind Hearted Place traditional taverna, but the reality was that for quite a few years the place had stumbled along, and therefore couldn't stay as it was. The partnership that have taken it over have long experience of running successful businesses. Theodoros resort, Stavento at Gouvia Marina and Bostonia villas at Almyros. Also the family are involved with Venus apartments here in Roda, and Island on the Beach also at Almyros. We think the front of the building has been renovated in keeping with the village, that is until the neon lights go on at night time. I have heard no further report so complaints about loud music, so they must have sorted it out. The rear of the building facing the beach has had the cladding removed to the original stonework as it was pictured in old photos. But the whole beach side and interior has been given a very modern twist using some traditional elements, eg the floor tiles. There have been some teething problems due to them having to open much sooner than they planned. We have talked with both partners and they admit there is still much work to be done, including improved staff and their training. They say they will be working through the close season to bring La Luz up to the standard they want. They are aiming at a younger clientele that want a place with a more modern feel to it. We are sure that Theo and Kostas will make a great success of it and it will become an asset to the village. A little modern corner in the heart of the village.

Thanks for that, I look forward to visiting. I know what you mean about the differing standards there in the last few years but had been my favourite last time we visited. Still struggling to imagine "modern" along that lane! Its all progress at the end of the day
