Just as the arrival of the house martins, swifts and swallows announce the coming of summer, so their departure signals its end. A couple of days ago as we were driving home we were passing very large numbers congregating on the power lines. Now, here in Roda, I haven't seen any of these birds for a day or so. They have gone. I expect, like in previous years, they linger longer around Corfu Town due to its micro climate. I have actually thought that there haven't been as many birds this year. Normally we take delight in watching them bathe in the swimming pool behind us, and we have commented on the low numbers. Even when I went for a swim at the Metallinos pool, normally I share the water with these delightful birds. There was only one, sad to say. I hope I am wrong and that this is only a glitch.

Just as the departure of the swallows/ swifts and house martins signals the end of summer approaching, then the appearance of the lorries from the mainland in lay-byes beside the main road indicate the start of autumn. These lorries are selling crates of grapes for wine making. If your harvest is short these lorries provide the shortfall or even the extra grapes needed for the next annual batch of wine. The price is usually very low and, I understand, they usually tell you the grape and where it came from. Any wine that is left over from last year can be offered at any wine festivals usually at little or no cost around the island. They need to clear all the bottles and containers for the 2016 vintage. This same practice is seen throughout other wine producing areas such as France and Spain. This nicely leads onto the wine festival here in Roda at the weekend, see Steve's post.

Just as you think all the swifts and swallows have gone, one flies passed me as I stood on the balcony. Quick look out the pack and there is a small flock all enjoying a morning bathe in the swimming pool at Semeli! They must surely be the stragglers as haven't seen any for about 5 days now. Ah well bon vayage, or as they are here kalo taxidi.

Summer is hanging on despite the recent torrential rains. Yesterday a sunny day and a walk from Boathouse along beach to St Spiriodon was very pleasant. Also many holidaymakers enjoying a day on the beach, sunbathing, playing in sand oor swimming. So while some hotels and apartments and tavernas are closed others are still doing well. Today is an ever better day.
