There was a sizable wild fire by San Stephanos (NE) yesterday. Can I please remind everybody that the grass is tinder dry as we have had no appreciable rain for a long time now. Please be careful how you discard cigarettes, make sure they are totally extinguished. Don't throw them out of cars, or from bikes, quads etc. There are water problems in many parts of the island so extra care is needed. Please do not use Chinese latterns that float into the sky as you do not know where they will land. Do not be tempted to have camp fires and barbeques if hiking/ walking in the olive groves

So again I am re-iterating, please be careful with cigarettes and lighters. Though the cause of either fire has not been reported yet.

I have just read that the wild fires around Barbati have closed the road there, so no access to Ipsos. Cars are being diverted along tracks to rejoin further along. These will not be suitable for buses and transfers coaches. So there may be delays. I will keep an eye on the situation.

It is such a dangerous time of the year. There have been terrible fires on Madeira near Funchal the capitol which have resulted in loss of life, and the small town of Vitrolles near Marseilles (which we have driven through) has seen much destruction. There are wild fires in Portugal mainland as well. So please be aware and deal with cigarettes and matches properly.

It has been a very dry and sunny month. Early today at just after midnight my dogs started to bark, people could be heard outside but not seen. I assumed they had passed, settled dogs and went to bed. Just before 1am a big commotion, 4 cars park opposite and people running about, my dogs again barking like crazy. There was a fire, inside olive tree wrapped in ivy and brambles, other side of track next to my neighbours. Flames and sparks leaping into the sky, highlighting the starlit night. A fire engine arrived and they started to hose, almost an hour later they had reduced it to smoke but it wasn't extinguished so they got out a chainsaw and started to cut tree down and the surrounding shrub to get into the centre of the tree. A 2nd fire engine arrived, probably just more water. The spectators had long gone, it seems my neighbour wasnt in as he didnt appear on his balcony despite the noise, the dogs were settled so at 2.15am i went to bed, it was about 3am i heard the fire engines depart. It is a bit early in the year for such a fire to come from a thrown cigarette so i suspect it was arson, maybe started when my dogs originally were barking and talking heard. It all looks ok today. It was fortunate the air was still last night otherwise the flames could so easily have spread to my neighbours trees, house and then onto mine. A lucky escape from what could have been a serious situation. Full praise to the fire brigade for there prompt attention and to ensuring the fire was fully extinguished.
An early warning that the risk of fires to trees and then spreading is possible even this time of year and that people should take care when disposing of cigarettes. Also discarded litter from passing traffic can build up in undergrowth providing fuel and something to ignite the flames.
