Anna, unless you pass close by, or stand by, a group of bins, you won’t smell anything at all, at least in the villages. A lady walked between me and the bins last week and her perfume was much stronger than anything we could offer. Mosquitos are no different than before, except that I believe there have been over 4 million moths released that feed on them. Be positive, and look forward to your stay.

Just returned from Corfu with some first time visitors. They were horrified and refused to go into some Tavernas in Corfu Town because of the smell and proximity of the rubbish. You have to look at the health issues. Summer is here. On the beach road to Acharavi, I had to walk around faeces covered toilet tissues where cats or other wildlife had got into the rubbish bags. I have written to the Mayor of Corfu via the link that is on here. No matter how you try to gloss over it, there is a very real problem that Corfu can do without.

To be honest, in Roda itself I haven't noticed a major problem, although it's noticeable everywhere else we've been. Having said that, we've noticed that the rubbish bins on the main road (near where the horses are) seem to have disappeared completely. So where would self catering people dispose of rubbish? Planning to walk down to Acharavi at some point - think we'll have to stay close to the water's edge rather than on the beach road after reading the above comment.

The problem is real and no one’s glossing over it ‘guest’ - it looks as though some of Roda’s rubbish is being moved to a site along the Sfakera road where it affects very few people other than those who go looking for it. In Acharavi, much seems to be going to the far end of the village, leaving empty bins in the centre where the visitors are more likely to go. I would encourage everyone who cares to make a comment on the link provided earlier. Corfu Town is much worse I believe, and hopefully the tour companies who bring thousands in on cruise ships will also bring pressure to bear.

Everyone generates rubbish at some time or other, but the problem, apart from the smell, is rats, or Corfu squirrels as I was told to call them - and I'm sorry to say it, but there are lots of rats on Corfu. Restaurants discard uneaten or left over food, it can't be avoided. Rats will go for whatever food is available. You might not see them, but they are there. There are still places where toilet paper cannot be flushed but must be 'put in the bin provided' and there are some people who do this out of habit - use the bin for disposal of toilet paper. There is no quick fix, but as a local or a frequent visitor it's understood there are problems, but for the first time visitors to see piles of rubbish everywhere doesn't give a very good impression. Don't know what the answer is, but with temperatures rising over the summer the problem will get worse.

Until such time as the main issue is addressed, I believe that all local rubbish should be removed or taken to the old, disused, Thinali council yard on the main road to Kassiopi. It could be aggregated there, with much less impact, until the problem is resolved.

Just back from another great 2 weeks in Roda and at least the rubbish bins at the stream on the edge of the village heading to the Boat House have been moved from the side of the road to over near the sea. There were a number of days where the smell was really strong and it doesn't give a good impression to anyone walking in to the village. In saying that it's nothing compared to the mountains of rubbish at the roadside in Corfu town that we saw on the way to the airport and if I was a first time visitor to the island would have serious doubts about returning and can only imagine the smell in July/August if this continues.

They have now started the collection of the rubbish to a temporary location; starting with the Town and tourist areas. Clearly will take a week or so to clear all the rubbish but at least a part solution has been found and tourists will soon not see any mounds of uncollected rubbish.

Shame the Greek reporter didn't tell the truth! I have driven through Corfu Town twice in the last 2 days - there is no sign of any rubbish being removed, the stench as you join the dual carriage way into town is horrendous, the mountains of rubbish are growing every day, some of the piles are more than 20 meters long and it continues all along Solari, up to the airport, next to the Liston and all along the Port road. I was told last night about 2 cruise ships that docked the other day, the tourists got off the ships and immediately got back on and the ships departed! If I was a first time visitor it would be my last time as well!! Something desperately needs to be done immediately before an already quiet season dies a death. Pete.
