I am going to talk about Corfu's favourite insect. You know the one, that little pesky thing that comes in all sizes and makes a particular high pitched hum when you are trying to sleep. Some people don't seem to be attacked others come away from holiday looking as though they have the measles. In deed some people react so badly they get huge blisters or infected sores. Yep, I am going to talk about the dreaded mosquito.
We were watching a program on TV this morning that was talking about effective protection from these charming little blighters. The demonstration was not for the feint hearted but the presenter obviously attracted our friends very nicely. Yeast, marmite, garlic and vitamin B tablets proved very ineffective. But people do swear by them if you start well before your holiday. These old wives suggestions fell down flat and even seemed to encourage the little darlings. Steve swears by lavender oil diluted in a skin tonic and rubbed well in. However a thorough, well rubbed in application of DEET proved very effective, with the insects turning their nose up at the proffered meat (sorry arm). However if you prefer to use something natural, then the PMD ( lemon eucalyptus oil ) was equally, if not more effective. Again it has to well rubbed in. There are many trade names that sell this type of protection, namely:_ Incognito, Repel, Mosi-guard, Cutter, Ben-s, Highland strength citripel, Life systems and Care plus. Many of these non- deet products are available from:-

A few years ago we had a major problem with mozzies on Kos and Helen had a huge number of bites on her legs so when we came the first time to Roda went up the to pharmacy at the cross rods and they suggested we try Korres Myrtle and Citronella emulsuion and we never had a bite all holiday. Been using it ever since but the pharmacy at the cross roads didn't stock it 2 years ago so we have bought it online since and Helen swears by it.

Many of the pharmacies here have Korres products, Ian - I'll keep an eye out for it.

Last time we came, we bought copious amounts of lavender shower gel with us, and also used lavender soap. Coupled with mosquito repellent it seemed to do the trick and we were hardly bitten. Have heard that Avon Skin so Soft spray is the bees knees when it comes to putting the little blighters off, so have stocked up on that for this year too.

Like wendyb we use a variety of methods in combination. Lemon soap combined with lavender on pillows and sheets alongside repellent wipes and for the first time last year skin so soft. One of them works just not sure which one !!! Will just keep combining.
