Hi Barnet
We happened across Roda on the internet 5 years ago when I was googling trying to find the name of a different resort. I found this forum and based on what I read myself and my husband decided to give Roda a try. I am so glad we did. We have been at least once, sometimes twice a year for the past 5 years. We have always said that we would not visit a place abroad twice because there are so many places to see but Roda has won us over. The locals are so friendly, a good selection of restaurants which offer delicious food at good value, the village is safe, I would be totally happy to visit there alone. I am already watching flight prices ready for next year so I can book to go again. We are lucky enough to be able to holiday elsewhere during the year as well but if it came down to us only being able to have one holiday it would be Roda. The area that is being talked about is a tiny part on the edge of the village. 3-4 general waste wheelie bins and a small water outlet. We pass this area at least 5-6 times a day when we stay in Roda as we have always stayed in various apartments on the outskirts of the village. It really isn't a problem believe me. Far less so than some of the places I have seen in Britain. There will always be people who raise concerns but I always tend to go with the majority. If you take time to browse through the forum posts you will see that majority of posters return year after year, that to me speaks volumes - why not give Roda a go - I am sure you will be hooked.
PS When i need a little Roda fix from home I use this link to the live webcam corfumirabell.click2stream.com which is just outside Roda village

I noticed what seemed like a little stream running down into the sea when I was there last month and on investigation didn't think it looked more than a trickle of clean water running down from the main stream area and into the sea. As for the rubbish bins, I was impressed they had been moved from the main road into the village since the last time I was there and where they are now is, although not perfect, a vast improvement to the look of the village as you enter it. To put it into context these two issues are a minor irritation for a small number of people... See you next year, Roda, Yamas!

Meanwhile back in the UK in Fife they are trialling collecting waste for landfill (as opposed to recycling) one every 4 weeks in one area and once every 3 in another with a view to rolling it out permanently. So it is not just Corfu where collections are becoming less frequent.

Good evening Barnet guest, i do hope you decide to make your holiday in roda you won't be disappointed. I've been returning to roda every year for the last 17 years and plan to continue doing so for as long as I can travel, being 30 this year that is still a lot of holidaying years left in me. Please don't be put off by negative comments from the minority of the members on this forum, I am 100% confident that you will have a wonderful time, the locals are so lovely and welcoming. All of the eateries and other facilities from the beach to accommodation/pools are kept spotless - where do you spend the most time i ask you?!?! To give you an idea i spend most of the day round the pool asleep, then i go back to my apartment to get showered then onto the restaurants to graze haha. The island of Corfu is beautiful there is nothing i would change about the place it is sheer perfection for me and my family and friends. regards Kelly
p.s. please give roda a chance it won't disappoint you i promise!!

I agree with everything that Kelly (withgreekorigin) says above except for one thing - she has been going to Roda for 20 years - as she is nearly 30 perhaps she is starting to have "senior moments" - her Mam certainly is!
Give Roda a try - the village and its people will draw you back again and again and again .....

I know this is not strictly about Roda, but it is about the end of the season here. We are now heading into autumn and the rug sellers are taking over from the fruit sellers. Soon there will be clothes and household soft goods being toted around. Passing through Acharavi the day before yesterday I took note of the usual rug van. Then I couldn't believe my eyes, there, on top of the van, stripped to the buff was the rug seller having an improvised shower with a bottle of water and a bucket. I must say I noted that his brown skin was not marred by any white bits, before I went sailing passed. Steve by the way missed it completely, I think he switches off at times. Not sure how many people spotted him, but it was on the main street in broad daylight. Must say it made my day. Did I also mention that he was young, fit, very brown, and with a lovely head of curly hair, and NO I didn't see whether he was endowed or not!

On the basis of what Laurence is saying, you can be forgiven for thinking that way. But is he correct, or is he pursuing some personal crusade? Laurence mainly patronises the Harbour Bar but, at this rate, he could single-handedly destroy much of their business for next year.
The owners of the Harbour Bar are an established and respected local family who know the way things work in Greece and have some influence. If there are issues here, then why are they not dealing with them personally? Two solutions have been suggested in the shoutbox – namely to get the owners to put themselves forward to the village committee for election, or for Laurence to approach the Syllogos via their Facebook page and make his opinions known. I suspect that neither has been done.
There is no doubt that there is some water seepage on to that section of the beach as there is grass growing alongside the road, down the stream, and in front of the Harbour Bar itself. Some of that, in season, comes from the very regular use of the shower in front of the tamarisk tree and the grass there is lush and healthy. When I looked at the stream a week or so ago, the outlet from the pipe under the road was completely dry, and yet there was clean, clear water further down on the beach. There was absolutely no smell. There were still lots of tourists here at that time.
Since the island started to install mains drainage, as yet unfinished, many anomalies have popped up – like the fresh water that flows out of a manhole at the end of the system in Acharavi. I still believe this is a groundwater issue, exacerbated (‘perhaps', Laurence!) by one of our many burst water pipes. I still don’t think there is a problem for visitors.
In 2010, the UK was labeled the ‘dustbin of Europe’ with predictions that we would run out of sites by 2018. Greece has a similar problem, and it is not confined to Corfu. Remember that we have had high numbers of visitors this year and I described the system for removing rubbish to landfill earlier. Our rubbish is not being collected as quickly as we would like, but it is being collected, not being left by the roadside indefinitely. It is the same across the island, the same in Zante, the same in Athens and the same many other countries.
I agree totally with kaz and I’m confident enough to say you should ignore Laurence’s grievances and see for yourself – you’ll have a great time. I wonder what others think?
Steve
Steve, I note that in the above quoted recent post you referenced the Facebook Page of Roda's Syllogos.
I've searched for that page on facebook, but have been unsuccessful. Could you please let me know the "name" of that referenced page.
Cheers, Chris

From memory, Chris, as you know I won’t use FB, I think it was Politikos Syllogos Rodas - I assume it is still operational.
