We promised over two weeks ago to tell you about cricket, and what a story it is. Not many of us realise that Thinali, the council district that embraces Roda & Acharavi, has its own cricket team - the ‘Athletic Club of Thinali’ – coached and managed by Alex from the Drunken Sailor. In 2008, for the first time, the youngsters, both Greek and British, entered the Greek national competition for under-fifteens – and won! Out of eighteen matches throughout the season they won every single one and took the championship when they defeated the ‘Athletic Club of Kerkyra’ on the Liston ground on November 30th. A cup will be presented at Christmas and we hope to have photos for you.
The Greek Cricket Association has a total of 21 youngsters’ clubs of which 14 are in Corfu, 5 in Athens and the rest at other locations. In 2009, it is hoped that new towns and cities will be fielding teams and future is looking good. Our local team will be playing next year on their own ground near to Acharavi and there are some very promising players coming through the ranks.
These lads are so enthusiastic and they need all the support they can get. It would be good to get visitors to the matches which take place during the tourist season (with the exception of August) and we want to encourage teams from other countries to play friendly matches throughout the year. In 2008, there were eight visiting teams and more are needed for 2009. It’s possible to play 5 twenty-over ‘friendlies’ during a ten-day period and anyone interested, young or not, is welcome to join in the regular training sessions and add their experience and help future development. Don’t forget that your support can make a massive difference.
Any one interested in finding out more, please contact us on the Forum. Here a ‘few’ of the photos we took at the last match.
