Also on May 1st, all passenger ferries will remain docked across Greece as the Pan-Hellenic Seamen’s Federation will go on a 24-hour strike to mark May Day.

Rumours are that there will be a village festival on May 1st - the traditional day for Roda. There is nothing confirmed yet and the forecast for that day is not so good ... we’ll let you know.

The festival is confirmed for Friday May 1st, subject to the weather. It was forecast to be rainy on Friday, but that seems to have now advanced to Thursday, so we may be lucky.

I imagine there will be food and drink available from soon after 7pm, but the festival won’t be in full swing until around 9pm. Some of the stalls were in place today and the forecast is good.

It was the perfect evening for our main festival of the year in Roda, on the very first full day of the season. It is no wonder that Greek traditions have continued for hundreds of years when you see just how many local people considerate it a duty and a privilege to support these local panagyris. Long may they continue ...

Another feature of May Day is the ’stefani’ - a wreath made typically from wild flowers. It is such a delight to get into the fields and woods at this time and collect armfulls of the most beautifully colourful and scented flowers, and everything is so prolific this year. This is our one, made from acacia, daisies, orchids and mayflowers.
